With the increasing development of science and technology and improvement ofmachinery manufacturing’ levels, especially widely use in CNC machine and machiningcenter, so that the types and numbers of tools have been increasing. The management oftools directly affect production efficiency, quality and costs. Meanwhile, it is an importantpart of enterprise information management. In this paper, the radio frequency identificationtechnology is used in tool management, and establish a set of automatic tool identificationand information management system. The main research work includes that:(1) According analyze the workshop tool management demand, the project membersdesign an automatic tool management system which is based on RFID. It consists of toolinformation management and automatic tool identification, the two parts’ combinationthrough the RFID tag which is fixed on the hilt and contains the basic information.(2) Completion of the automatic tool identification system working platformcomparison and selection, members of the project choose a work platform for the toolautomatic identification system and select operating frequency of the radio frequencyidentification system and also reader, RFID models. The member of the project hasdesigned a flexible ten yards bit tool encoding scheme to realize only coding tools that laythe foundation for tool information management and automatic identification.(3) The member of the project has developed tool information management systembased on C/S architecture in C#language and have built a tool information databasethrough using the Access, the RS232serial port and tool setting gauge, RFID reader.Finally the project has realized the tool storage, tool information query, tag informationwritten.(4) The member of project has designed a tool of automatic identification systems,added and developed the CP340(RS485) serial communication modules and SM323switch module in Siemens840D system, finished the RFID reader and the control ofreader head movement.(5) The Tool Management System had been running for three months in YuchaiMachinery Group in Guangxi province cold processing factory of knife room and HELLER MCH300machining center test. During the process, the average daily growth ofquantity of processing works had increased by9.61%; the qualified had increased sharply.The project had eliminated the manual operation error; the costs of the tool managementhad saved.
