In recent years, with the rapid development of network technology, some large-scale interconnection networks are being widly used, the requirements to precision of clock synchronization is increasing in the systems, the fields of communications, monitoring and industrial automation have proposed the requirments for microsecond magnitude even nanosecond magnitude to the synchronization accuracy, IEEE1588protocol which is the precision clock synchronization protocol, was born. IEEE1588can achieve high-precision clock synchronization across different clocks in systems, in which these clocks can have the difference in accuracy, resolution and stability. And moreover, the aggrement can achieve synchronization without increasing the network load at the same time.The paper firstly introduces the technology of clock synchronization in packet networks, and compares the advantages and disadvantages of various synchronization technologies. Then it explains the working mechanism of IEEE1588v2protocol, the key algorithms and clock models. On the basis of the IEEE1588v2protocol, it makes a detailed analysis of using the method of packet switching to achieve frequency synchronization, and then makes a comparison test with the common method of frequency synchronization used in engineering network, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of two kinds of methods. Finally, the paper makes a performance testing to actual engineering application of IEEE1588v2aggrement, respectively, analyzing and studying the synchronization performance of the protocol in IPRAN network and OTN network environment.This paper mainly studies the method that packet switching achieves frequency synchronization, and deduces the formula of packet switching achieving frequency synchronization. Compared with the isochronous Ethernet, the method of packet switching can meets the accuracy requirement of relevant standards in synchronous state through analyzing the test data. As this method is easily affected by network business flow, it can not compare with isochronous Ethernet in terms of stability, but packet switching doesn’t need the support of hardware and software, the device can achieve frequency synchronization as long as it has the function of PTP, which can save the cost.
