Palmprint recognition, an emerging biometric technology with advantages of simple collection, information-rich image, difficult to counterfeit, is subject to wide attention at home and abroad researchers. It is more tailored more prospects to achieve a palmprint recognition system in a small embedded platform rather than mainstream PC (Personal Computer) platform. It is found that the current identification speed of embedded platform mostly is2seconds by contact image acquisition with ARM (Advanced RISC Machines). To break these limitaaions, the paper adopts a method of a low speed processer and FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array)-based hardware accelerator SoPC (System on Programmble Chip) units to develop the palmprint recognition system, added with some peripherial devices. This article describes the basic principles of palmprint recognition as well as DE2-70EVB based on EP2C70produced by Altera Corp. and some peripherial devices for the system. On the basis of the hardware development platform on FPGA, a palmprint recognition system is designed and implements. The characters of this paper are every step of palmprint recognition system is accelerated by FPGA hardware resources and contactless image capture. NiosII soft-core processer is imported into the system as the control and processing core of the palmprint recognition system. The system is divided into some main modules:the core-controlling and processing module, SD (Secure Digital) card reading/writing module, image acquisition module, palmprint display module, button controlling module and etc. After that algorithm-specific codes were striped. Then C2H(C to Hardware Acceleration) compiler and NiosⅡ custom instructions were used for acceleration. The experiment results show that the system has implemented the functions of the palmprint recognition system, having its own advantadge on increasing the identification speed (<1.6s). In conclusion, it has a wide application prospect.
