To implement more accurate and fine-grained environment monitoring, it is necessary to introduce image or video multimedia data into Wireless Sensor Networks, and there come into being Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSN) with high-perception ability. The academic circles have been making active research on wireless multimedia sensor nodes, but the nodes based on traditional microprocessors exist some problems, such as limited processing capability, low degree of freedom in development, and weak transplantation performance. Aiming at these problems, the design scheme of wireless multimedia sensor nodes based on SOPC is put forward and implemented in the paper, and a set of hardware development platform of WMSN is built.The main research contents of this paper include: the system structure of WMSN, the method of hardware-software co-design, the reuse and design of embedded IP cores, the In-Node Processing technology on embedded multimedia data, and the transplantation of embeddedμCLinux operating system. The major tasks completed are as follows:Firstly, the performance requirement and development trend of wireless multimedia sensor nodes are analysed. On the base of comparing three feasible nodes frameworks, the design scheme of wireless multimedia sensor nodes based on SOPC is put forward, and the selection of key devices is analysed.Secondly, the development flows and design methods of SOPC are made research, and the key IP function modules in the bottom of WMSN are designed and implemented, which are the important parts of In-Node Processing and In-Node Communicating. The image acquisition and display, color space converters, motion object detection, image edge extraction, JPEG compression, and ZigBee communication interface have been implemented in the paper. All the IP function modules have been tested and verified on the sensor nodes.Thirdly, the software framework of wireless multimedia sensor nodes based on SOPC is analysed, and the main work flow diagram of the system is provided in the paper. Besides, the transplantation of embeddedμCLinux operating system is made research and tested on the sensor nodes.Lastly, every IP function module on wireless multimedia sensor nodes is made integration, and a series of experiment data and results are provided, which are in accord with the expectant purpose.
