In recent years, optical fiber access network as a rapidly developing technology has become the current network infrastructure because of its large capacity and wide frequency band.EPON which is composed of Ethernet and PON gradually becomes the best choice of the nest generation access network. In order to guarantee the stability efficiency and accuracy of EPON, it is important to provide an protocol which is names OAM for EPON. At the same time, resent research has shown that, today among all network segments optical fiber access network consumes more than75%of energy of all telecommunication network equipment. Considering the fast extensibility of access network connection, the number of users and the future speed of data transmission will continuously increase, the energy consumption of optical fiber access network must be more higher. Therefore, the research on energy-saving about how to design the optimal EPON energy mechanism obtains more and more attention. In this paper, we examine the management mechanism and energy saving mechanism of EPON. It mainly includes the following topics:1. Based on EPON network architecture, we examine the composition, working mechanism and all kinds of key technology of EPON. We analyze the development of PON and have made the comparison about APON, EPON and GPON.2. We examine energy saving mechanism of EPON which is a major data transmission network. We propose a new energy consumption model, and then do some simulations. The simulation results show that the energy saving mechanism proposed in this paper not only can reduce the energy consumption but also ensure the QoS.3. We analyze the necessity of OAM protocol in EPON. Based on experimental platform, we designs the automatically discover registration process of OAM protocol, which is efficient management mechanism.
