In light of the rapid development of computer technology in the recent years,medical informatics has been widely implemented in hospitals. The variousinformation systems, such as HIS (Hospital Information System), LIS(LaboratoryInformation Management System), PACS(Picture Archiving and CommunicationSystem), EMR(Electronic Medical Record) etc, have been applied in the clinicalservice and financial affairs in major hospitals. Unlike many large corporationswhich have profited from the hidden information in computer data through the use ofBI(Business Intelligence) and Data Mining progress, hospitals have not been makingfull use of these systems. For this reason, hospital officials are starting to make thefull use of medical informatics one of their priorities, in an effort to upgradeadministration、diagnostic/treatment workflow、and medical research.In the era of information, the development in medical informatics has resulted inexponential increase in medical data, which hold valuable information in abundance.If the information gathered is applied properly, the informatization system can bringconvenience to the hospital management. The model integrates the data resourcesproduced by HIS、LIS、PACS、EMR etc., and produce detailed analyses to ensure thefunction modules fulfill the design purpose anticipated.In the technical aspect, the platform uses ETL to Extract, Transform and Loaddata to data warehouse. Then, it executes the OLAP and Data Mining procedure toanalyse the information which has been loaded to the data warehouse. At last, theseanalysed data will be presented to users with multidimensional table, bar chart, piechart and curve tracing. The method in this thesis to implement the data warehousebuilding by ETL, OLAP and data mining is Microsoft SQL Server2008, whichprovides a tool suite named Business Intelligence Development Studio. This tool isan general and extensible Data Warehouse Platform with the functions of integratingdata of various types and powerful analysis, and it can fulfill the data requirement ofusers in different ranges. This article mainly pertains to the theme of BI applied in the hospitalinformatization. The first section of this paper introduces the background and thecurrent state of BI in hospitals. The second section explains the key techniques andthe sub-modules of BI. The third section presents the whole architecture of BIapplied in hospitals. The fourth section discusses in detail the BI applications inhospitals. The last part summarizes this paper in its entirety and discusses theprospects of BI in the development of medical informatics in hospitals.
