Color is at the eye point of the website, and is also key to the success of web design. Web page background color design plays an important part in the web page color design, and is continually concerned by practical and research fields. Depth, detailed and comprehensive study on the web page background color not only provides science-based reference for web designers, but also provides assessment criteria for the effectiveness and utility of web.It can be seen that research on web page background color has an important practical significance. However, the entry point of related researches is quite traditional; what’s more, many of them remain stop in the qualitative research phase but less in-depth quantitative research.Based on relevant results and combined with the actual needs of web design, this paper did an exploratory-experimental research from the perspective of the user experience (UE), and then tried to create the quantitative relationship model between color attributes and the UE. Furthermore, the research results would be used for guiding the selection and design of the page background color. The research work has mainly covered the following four aspects:Firstly, an experimental web page background color library was built. To achieve quantitative research on color, this paper used the Munsell Color System when building the initial color library. Then, the initial color library was used for designing of the color perception questionnaire, from which the ranking of user’s color preference was got. On this basis, filtering rules were designed to select colors meeting the experiment needs, and then together with several fundamental colors and achromatic colors the experiment web page background color library was composed.Secondly, an emotional experience scale was built. To study the user’s emotional experience, this paper collected lots of literature on emotions, and then built an emotional experience scale. The formation of the scale mainly referred the semantic-word method in Kansei Engineering and has passed validation.Thirdly, experimental study about web page background color was carried out. This paper broke through the limitations of previous studies, combined the color research with "UE", and then did the experimental study. In the process of the experimental study, the simulation web page was designed to control the variables, experimental design and implementation was rigorous based on experimental research literatures, and data of subjects’ eye movements and the task of operating during the experiment were captured by SMI eye tracker. At last, Statistical analysis on experimental data was done to prepar for next reaearch. Finally, exploratory study on relationship between web page background color and three-dimensional experience of users was carried out. UE covers three aspects:sensory experience, practical experience and emotional experience, which were quantitatively characterized by eye movement data, task performance data and score of emotional experience separately in this paper. In details, this paper first did qualitative research on relationship between web page background color and three-dimensional experience of users, and then built a multiple nonlinear relational model which has passed statistical test and other related tests, using variable conversion and stepwise regression methods. At last, based on the study results above, some general recommendations on selecting and designing of the web background color were posed. As exploratory experimental study, this study not only carried out innovation on ideas and methods which compensated for the lack of previous research but also would provide a valuable reference for web page designers in designing the web page color.
