In recent years, the communication demands of people become complex increasingly, so that a variety of wireless communication technologies are emerging constantly. Especially in the areas of environment monitoring and emergency communications, due to the complexity of geographical environment and deficiency of communication facilities, single-mode wireless communication system is difficult to satisfy the practical applications. Therefore, the key to solve these problems is to design a multi-mode gateway which can support multiple wireless network access.In this thesis, we study and analyze a new multi-mode gateway and introduce a transmission mechanism, which can be applied to the wireless multi-mode gateway. This mechanism realizes a series of functions, such as networks detection, networks selection and devices netwoiking. Meanwhile, we combine the satellite networks with the gateway to achieve the communication in the emergency situations. Using these methods, the wireless multi-mode gateway can select a communication network adaptively according to surrounding environment. This mechanism can enhance the reliability of the network. At last we develop a prototype system on the Linux-based ARM platform to verify the feasibility of solutions.
