Tower cranes are widely used in manufacturing, transportation and building construction because of its higher lifting height, larger working space and higher working efficiency. Loading and unloading, carrying goods with the tower cranes is a special type of work that belongs to high altitude operations. The driver’s operating skill can directly affect people’s life and property safety. In order to improve the operational safety, the tower crane drivers must undergo safety technique training and assessment that consists of both an academic component and an operating skill component. After passing the examination and obtaining special work operating certificates, they can then operate the tower cranes. However, the current form of the academic examination for the tower crane drivers is yet paper-based at present, which make the automation extent of the academic examination is much lower. Therefore, aiming at the academic examination of the tower crane, an online examination system for tower crane operators is developed. The successful development of the examination system is of practice importance for realizing automation of the academic examination, selecting qualified drivers and improving efficiency of examination work.The whole process of developing the online examination system for tower crane operators are studied systematically and deeply in this dissertation. The main research results are as follows:(1) In order to ensure the development process flow, system architecture, the related development theory and technology, and the development platforms, this paper firstly analyzes the development process flow of the system, which combines with the general process of software development. Then, the system architecture is selected by comparing the different the system architecture pattern. Finally, through analyzing related development theory and technology, the software and hardware platforms for developing the system are ensured. Thus, the theoretical basis for the development of the online examination system for tower crane operators is provided.(2) Based on the fully understanding of functional requirements for the online examination system, the whole system function module structure and its process flow are clarified for the system development. By combining with the analysis of related technology, the database and the development steps of the system application program are designed in detail. Therefore, a lot of preparations are done for the development of the online examination system for tower crane operators.(3) For user interfaces of the system, the module and button modes are used to design the different user interfaces, which makes the examination form consistent with the form of the paper-based examination. Especially, different answering manners are used for different test question types. For instance, the system adopts the manner of long document input field to answer the short-answer question and the manners of mouse click to answer the multiple-choice question and the true-false question. In addition, the examinees can switch the test question types at any time to check and modify their answers repeatly before submitting test papers. Hence the friendly and structure-concise operating interfaces are provided for user.(4) Aiming at the characteristics of paperless on the examination system, and based on a complete set of test question bank, the automated test paper generation is realized by using the randomized algorithm according to the strategies of automatically generating test papers. At the same time, the automated scoring is achieved by using the matching pattern based on the criterion of automatically scoring. Furthermore, the examination results are summed and analyzed. Moreover, the system using a timer control to trigger the timer event and count can control the progress of whole examination process by means of a countdown of the remaining time, which realize the control of examination time. The realization of key techniques on the automated test paper generation, the automated scoring, and automated countdown could enhance the scientificalness and rationality of the examination system. Therefore, online operations of examination are realized.(5) For the security mechanism of the system, the user login module is designed. The system is secure by designing the user permission. That is to say, the users who entry the examination system must be verified through the user identities, makes the users with different permission entry different modules. Therefore, the system can be operated safely based on the different user permission, which prevents the unauthorized users from accessing and operating the system.
