Evolvable Hardware(EHW) is a kind of multi-disciplinary research, including theprogrammable logic devices, artificial intelligence, automatic control systems andfault-tolerant mechanisms. Essentially, it is a hardware circuit that can change its structuresand functions to adapt to the changes of the surrounding living environment dynamicallyand autonomously, according to the changes of the external environment. Currently, thetechnology of EHW can be used as a technology platform and experimental basis toachieve the initial research of electromagnetic bionics circuit, the research purposes ofwhich is to realize automatic design of complex circuits, obtain novel, optimized andhaving self-healing circuit system architecture. It includes evolutionary algorithm andprogrammable logic devices and is the organic integration of the two aspects.The implementation of evolutionary algorithm and the encoding scheme ofprogrammable devices is analyzed in this thesis. The Xilinx’s Spartan3E series developmentboard is used as the experimental platform of evolution, the integrated softwaredevelopment environment(ISE) and embedded development kit(EDK) is used as itshardware design tools. The software and hardware’s collaborative work mode based on fieldprogrammable gate array(FPGA) is studied, completing on-chip self-evolution design ofthe simple digital circuit. Specific works as follows:1. The design of hardware systemsThe self-evolutionary hardware circuit is constructed, which is based on the technologyof system on programmable chip(SOPC) and the virtual reconfigurable circuits(VRC), andincludes to establish the virtual reconfigurable circuit array and Microblaze soft-coreprocessor. In the implementation process of the hardware evolution, the VRC array is usedfor evolutionary template and Microblaze processor is used as completing the evolvablecore of intelligent property(IP) customization for the virtual reconfigurable circuits. Bothare connected and downloaded to the internal operation of programmable devices throughbeing designed by hardware description language and generated configuration bit stream. 2. The application development and design of software systemsThe evolutionary algorithm in C language program is prepared, and the operatingparameters of algorithm is determined in order to achieve the evolutionary operations ofevolvable core. The best individual is found based on the fitness value evaluation criteriaand configured to VRC circuit through the establishment of communication of Microblazeand VRC. Then the VRC circuit is ran to get the target evolutionary circuits of meeting thefunctional requirements.3. The validation of the experimental resultsThe two multipliers and adders are used as the experimental examples and the designprocess of hardware circuit’s internal evolution is verified. The independent characteristicsof evolvable hardware in the automatic design and optimization of the digital circuits areshowed, which allow the designers to complete the circuits design on the conditions of nothaving any prior knowledges about the circuit than the conventional circuits.
