The design and accomplishment of a set of partial discharge (PD)locating system for substation based on UHF detecting method wasintroduced. Based on the introduction of the partial discharge principle andthe characteristics of the UHF detection, the overall design of the programwas promoted. Then the paper introduced the hardware architectures of thesystem and the test of the sensors and pre-conditioning circuit. Thesoftware development of the system based on virtual instrument waselaborated, which was written on LabVIEW platform. The main contents of the system include UHF antenna array,pre-conditioning circuits, high-speed digital oscilloscope and laptop. TheUHF antenna array receives partial discharge electromagnetic signals. Thepre-conditioning circuits are used for signal filtering and amplification. The oscilloscope completes the data acquisition, and the laptop carries outdata display, analysis, locating process and storage, as well as the controlof the acquire settings of the oscilloscope. The implementation of the software function and the locating methodwas described in the paper. The system, which was able to carry outon-line locating, data storage as well as off-line data analysis, providedquick detecting and locating, multi-waveform locating, multi-cycle modeand manual mode detection. The paper then described in detail the locatingmethod, including wavelet de-noising, time difference extraction andlocating algorithm. The error analysis of the locating algorithm was alsopromoted. Finally, the locating test of the system in laboratory environment for the simulation of partial discharge was introduced. Respectively, the PDsimulator and PD model designed in laboratory was used for PD source toverify the accuracy of the locating effects. The results indicated that thelocating angles have quite high precision while the locating distances stillneed to be improved.
