The radar target simulation system, a sub-system for simulating the radar echo-signal,plays a significant role in the research on modern radar. With improved resolution andenhanced function of radar, the radar target is now defined as an extended target withmultiple-scattering-points, rather than the point target. The simulated echo signal forextended target works better in the radar simulation systems, as compared to the traditionalsimulated echo signal for point target. However, this improvement comes with a price: thehigh implementation complexity and the increased demand for simulating the echo signalof radar. Therefore, exploring and modelling the echo signal for the extensional target arequite valuable for future research on the theory and implementation of radar.This dissertation starts with an introduction of the radar echo signal, the point targetand extensional target of radar, which is followed by the demonstrations of coordinationsystems and the conversion of coordination systems. Then, combined with typical radartransmit signal, the model of radar echo signal for extensional target is proposed. Thismodel is designed by applying the scattering theory on the impulse response function of thetraditional echo signal for point target. The design of relevant algorithms and the theoreticalsimulation are then presented.A research on the reconstruction of the radar target is conducted based on the proposedmathematical model of the extensional target. A method used to obtain the simulationsystem for radar target is designed based on the digital radio frequency memory (DRFM)and the theory on simulating the radar target.Finally, the software and hardware implementation of the simulation system of theecho signal for extensional target are explored.The details on the type of FPGA chips, thehardware resources, the configuration of PCB cards and the simulation results are explainedand the performance of the proposed model of the echo signal for extensional target is thenexamined. Also, the theoretical and the software implementation of the simulation systemof the radar echo signal are presented.With theoretical simulations and practical experiments, the proposed simulationsystem on the radar echo signal for extensional target and its related software system are verified to well meet the demands on the performance of the simulation system of the radarecho signal.
