FTTH (Fiber To The Home), as the name suggests, is a fiber directly to the home. Specifically, FTTH refers to the optical network unit (ONU) installed in the home user or at the enterprise user which is closest to the user except for FTTD (fiber to the desktop) for optical access series of optical access network application type.In recent years, the HDTV, IPTV, video conferencing,3D video, large data marked ultra-broadband era has come for a variety of broadband services, especially video services, having high requirements for user access bandwidth. ADSL bandwidth is limited, which is difficult to meet the growing bandwidth needs of the user on domestic broadband access application. FTTH can provide large bandwidth to resolve these contradictions properly, which makes how to build an efficient, economic, safe fiber to the home network come to an important issue.As infrastructure in the area of fiber access network, FTTx, having a variety characters of large capacity, wide coverage, low cost per unit bandwidth, carry high-quality video, Environmental, coupled with a growing mature technology and the rapid decline cost, as well as national telecommunications open policy and government support, is becoming the investment focus of the national carriers, causing a worldwide wave of FTTx construction boom. As the technology maturing and cost declining, the popularity of FTTH will be unstoppable. It will become a new bright spot of China telecom industry in the next few years.This paper outlines FTTx development status at home and abroad, which followed by a brief introduction to the development of PON technology, type, technical characteristics, as well as several PON technology comparison. Then, A detailed study of GPON technology systems, protocol reference model, PMD layer, GTC layer and GPON works is carried out. Finally, as Beijing Telecom FTTH engineering for instance, the implementation of the GPON FTTH is proposed and verified, and problems and solutions encountered are discussed in the process of building.
