Optical transmission is getting more popular in the access network due to the increasing demand for bandwidth. At present, the most advertised transport solutions for the optical access are Passive Optical Network(PON).GPON (Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network) is the basic technology to support the structure of the next-generation fiber to the home (FTTH) system as the newest technology of the Access Network. GPON uses powerful soft switch platform to access to a variety of business conveniently. In particular, GPON meets the operators demand in flexible networking, network protection, farther transmission distance and easy background management. As GPON combines theory with application, it has a strong market vitality, especially in the promotion of three-network integration which is bound to be a wide range of promotion and application.This paper describes the development of GPON technology and conducts a detailed analysis of its theoretical basis and standard protocols. GPON key technology is researched, including the PMD layer specification of PON interface, transmission convergence (GTC) layer, dynamic bandwidth allocation mechanism, GEM encapsulation protocol, ONT activation mechanism, and OMCI (ONT Management and Control Interface) specification. Based on laboratory environment, according to the requirements of the GPON system networking and combined with existing GPON system terminal products, all kinds of ONT are in system test practice, which confirms the feasibility of the theoretical basis and can be timely found deficiencies and problems, in order to optimize the the ONT technique. On that basis, the paper detailedly analyses characteristics of the three application modes of GPON--FTTB/FTTC/FTTH and three basic network modes--star mode, tree mode, bus mode. According to the actual demands, we can flexibly choose the appropriate application mode and network formation to make full use of resources and to provide users with better demands for multi-business services. Finally, this paper presents a GPON access network market model in our prospects and its development trend.This paper analyses and researches the technology of GPON, the design of ONT and system performance analysis in GPON system from aspects of the theory, protocols, test and practice, which reflects the market value and promotional value.
