IPv4has played an important role in the Internet development. However, with the rapiddevelopment of network application and the sharp extension of network size, IPv4exposeslots of defects gradually, especially the serious insufficient of IP address. So IPv6arises at thehistoric moment. But IPv6failed to replace IPv4because of various reasons, which leads tothe long-term coexistence of IPv4and IPv6and the more complicated situation of network. This coexisted network carries on a huge challenge of effective network management. On theother hand, it’s a basic requirement to maintain an accurate network topology for networkmanagement. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the hybrid network topologydiscovery. In this paper, we study hybrid topology discovery of the network running in anautonomous area. After the deep research and analysis of the existing network topology discoverytechnologies, this paper focuses on the key technologies of hybrid network topologydiscovery and the improvement based on completeness, accuracy, efficient and load, including: improving the algorithm based on Auto Seed Selection (ASS) to ensure topologyintegrity; putting forward Multi-Tree algorithm based on source routing to improve detectionefficiency; proposing Jump-Hop algorithm combined with history topology records; puttingforward rules to compress source-routing detection space to reduce redundant detectionpaths;improving the traditional network topology auto-layout algorithm based onrepulsion-tension model.According to the description above, this paper designed and implemented an IPv4/IPv6coexistence network topology discovery system for an autonomous area, which can foundrouters, connections, interfaces and subnets in the network. Test results indicate that accuracy, coverage and efficiency of the system are satisfying, which means that the system meets therequirements of topology discovery in IPv4/IPv6coexistence network.
