As the most important function of network management system, topology discovery gets more and more people’s extensive attention. The ability of discovering various network topologies becomes a most important quota of measuring the network management system. As the network management system of Neusoft NetPrtrol should provide3kinds of network topology discovery.This paper discussed the relatively common computer network topology and analyzed the characteristics of these topologies. During the period of writing paper, I have designed and implemented of the OSPF, VLAN and STP network topology discovery. The system can discovery a good large-scale network topology OSPF router connections; switch port’s VLAN attributes as well as STP spanning tree topology and so on.Due to the development of NetPatrol, there are some problems in the data structure of topology discovery system. While based on analyzing these network topologies, the paper designed a kind of storage structure that can store OSPF, VLAN and STP network topologies’ data. The design of data storage provides a theoretical and practical basis for the products’ high efficiency, uniformity and scalability development. It makes the product can not only store the various and changing network topology, but to facilitate the interface to be more reasonable. In addition to the relevant network protocol involved during process of building data structures, the topic also involves data sturcture, software engineering and so forth.
