Private book collecting in ancient China is a cultural phenomenon with abundantconnotation; it connected with the collection and inheritance of ancient books, academicculture tradition, and the development of the librarianship. The influence and contribution ofthe private book collecting in ancient China to the social culture and life not depended onindividual book collectors only, but depended on the effort of the group of private bookcollecting which aimed at the development and extension of the atmosphere of bookcollecting. Qing dynasty is the golden age of ancient private book collecting; a larger scale ofgroup of private book collecting was formed. Because of the particularity of the socialbackground, a group characteristic which different from the previous dynasties was formed inthe group of private book collecting of Qing dynasty gradually, the connotation of bookcollecting was enriched as well.The first part of this paper defines the concept of the group of private book collecting,this paper introduces the historical evolution of the group of private book collecting, itanalyzes the background and process of the formation of the group of private book collectingin Qing dynasty as well; The second part of the paper summarized the basic situation of thegroup of private book collecting and the characteristics of book collecting activities in Qingdynasty emphatically, and finally points out the historical contribution of the group of privatebook collecting of Qing dynasty.The group of private book collecting of Qing dynasty made a huge contribution in thepreservation and sorting of ancient books, the promotion of the development of academicexchanges, the prosperity of librarianship, the opening of private library, and the promotion offormation of the modern library.
