Yu Youren is famous as a revolutionist, a calligrapher and a poet. He regards education as the basis of national revival and devotes his life to the cause of education with the firm belief of “Education Saves and Promotes the Nation”. He, as an early practitioner of vocational education, also plays an important role in the cause of vocational education.Although there was concern on academic study of Yu Youren’s vocational education, scholars only have a research on piecemeal study of one of his vocational education practice. Few scholars have summarized Yu Youren’s vocational educational practice and thought. This thesis uses literature research method to summarize Yu Youren’s vocational education practice and thought with the help of scholars’ previous research. This paper tries to summarize his vocational education thought from the following aspects: educational purpose, educational content, and teaching methods and values education.This thesis is beneficial to the richness of theoretical study on vocational education in the period of Republic of China and enriches the study on Yu Youren’s education thought, which has an positive significance in promoting Shaanxi celebrities and Chinese traditional culture inheritance.This thesis contains four chapters. The first part is introduction. In this part, we talk about the research problem, research significance and reach method. We mainly have a literature review on Yu Youren’s education and vocational educational thought; the second chapter discusses the social background and course of Yu Youren’s education practice. At that time, war occurs frequently and economy is backward. With the rise of educational trends on education for national salvation and industrial salvation, Yu Youren devotes to education career. His education practices experience the three periods: enlightenment through education, education for national salvation and rejuvenation period; the third chapter summarize Yu Youren’s vocational education practices from the following aspects: military national vocational education, agricultural vocational education and industrial vocational education; The forth chapter talk about the content,characteristic and enlightenment of Yu Youren’s vocational educational thought. The content of his vocational educational thought are as follows: statecraft education purpose, socio-economic oriented courses, developing students practical skills with the combination of theory and practice, emphasis on professional values education. The characteristics of his vocational educational thought include the following aspects: education for national salvation and rejuvenation, practical features of statecraft and sympathy for farmers with agriculture-based culture. We can learn from Yu Youren’s vocational education thought. Vocational schools should have clear orientation, serving economic and social development; they should set up majors and courses according to market demands; besides, they should pay more attention to promote students practical skills and educate students’ professional values.
