Objective:to investigate the status of clinical communication ability, psychological resilience and emotional intelligence among nursing students, and to explore the relationships among the emotional intelligence, psychological resilience and clinical communication ability. From the perspective of positive psychology, it could provide theorectical foundation for finding approaches to enhance clinical communication ability.Methods:the survey was conduct in the General Hospital (A Class) of Shandong Province. According to convenient sampling method,377 nursing students were involved in this study. They were assessed using Clinical Communication Skills Scale, Emotional Intelligence Scale (EI) and Psychological Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10). The data were analyzed with SPSS 17.0 for windows and the methods of statistic analysis were applied including descriptive statistics,t test, ANOVA, correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis.Results:1. General population sociology data in higher vocational nursing students.The average age was (21.36±1.24) (range from 16 to 24),308 (81.7%) nursing students were female.259 (68.7%) came from rural areas,112 (29.7%) were the only child,309 (82.0%) enjoyed a general family economic level.2. The scores of psychological resilience and emotional intelligence.The scores of clinical communication ability, resilience and emotion intelligence among nursing students were (85.91±10.44), (28.20±5.61) and (125.88±15.41). Each dimension from high to low in orders are:establish a harmonious relationship, (19.03±3.03), keen to listen (16.36±2.78), confirm patients problem (15.63±2.73), verify the feeling (15.11±2.84), participating in (11.07±2.34) and passing the effective information (8.72±1.51). Female nursing students had a higher score in both total scores and every dimension scores compared with male nursing students. Students from city had a higher score on the "keen to listen" and "confirm patients’ problem" than students from rural area. The only children had a lower score on the total score and establish a harmonious relationship compares with non-only child.3. The correlation of clinical communication ability, emotional intelligence and resilience.The total scores of nursing students in psychological resilience was (28.20±5.61), and the average score was (2.82±0.56). The score of emotional intelligence was (125.88±15.41) and the average score was (3.81±0.47). The four dimensions of emotional intelligence scale from high to low were emotional perception (47.18± 6.36), others emotional management (37.49±5.36), self emotion management (23.92 ±3.49) and emotional expression (17.33±2.90) in order. Pearson correlation analysis showed that there are significant positive correlation between clinical communication ability, and psychological resilience (r=0.402-0.462, P< 0.001) emotional intelligence and its dimensions (r=0.412-0.595, P< 0.001). A significant positive correlation was found between psychological resilience, intelligence emotion and its dimensions (r=0.407-0.624, P< 0.001)4. Hierarchical regression analysis of clinical communication skills, emotional intelligence and psychological resilience.Results of regression analysis showed that emotion intelligence and psychological resilience could positively predict the clinical communication skills after controlling the socio-demographic information, with explaining the 20% and 16.5% variance of clinical communication skills, respectively.Conclusions1. The level of clinical communication ability of nursing students was medium.2. Psychological resilience, emotional intelligence and clinical communication ability were positively correlated with each other.3. Enhancing psychological resilience and emotion intelligence might be beneficial to improve the clinical communication ability.
