A Study Of Primary School Students Attending Private Supplementary English Tutoring

In the autumn of the year 2001, Education Department required that English should be taught as a compulsory course from grade three. At present, most of the primary schools open English class from grade three in our country. And primary students attend kinds of private supplementary English tutoring at weekends or on holidays besides taking English class in their primary school. Undoubtedly, it must produce a big influence on English learning of primary school students and English teaching of primary school teachers.On the basis of the related theories, Human Capital theory and Cultural Reproduction theory, the paper makes a comparative analysis on the aspects of the selection of teaching materials, the current situation of teachers, teaching methods and approach of the above two organizations through questionnaire and interview. The subject of the study includes 200 primary students and English teachers in Baoding City. By thinking this phenomenon critically, the author believes that there are several questions should be taken into considered. What are the current situations of primary school students attending private supplementary English tutoring? What are the reasons of attending English tutoring? What is the influence of private supplementary English tutoring on English teaching of primary school students?The results of the study show that the rate of students in grade 4, grade 5 and grade 6 who are attending private supplementary English tutoring is about 34.16%, and there are 23.71% students choose to attend English tutoring in future. The reasons of the students choose to attend English tutoring includes the social factors, school factors, parents factors and the students factors. And the most important factor is the students’ personal factors. Because according to the research, there are 48.8% students say the reason why they choose to attend tutoring class is that they have difficulty in study English; they want to keep their high scores in the class; they want to learn something more after class. Then the author analyzes the influences in positive and negative aspects. The positive influences include that tutoring class can improve the students English examination scores, lay a good English learning foundation for their future study, exploit students’ potential of learning English, enrich out-school lives of students and improve the students’ individual development. While the negative influences includes the tutoring class will extra learning burden, bring inconvenience to school English teachers, cause unequal education opportunity and cause some bad learning habits.At last, the author gave some suggestions separately to the students, their parents, English teaching in primary school and the local education authorities. The author hopes this paper will be useful to help the entire related person in this area. And concerning the whelming expansion of the private supplementary English tutoring, the urgent task is to realize the mutual compensation of advantages of primary school English teaching and private supplementary English tutoring.
