Graded Readers are books with illustration,in which the language is simplified by vocabulary,grammar,sentence structure and content;they range from easy to difficult,basic to advanced,based on the law of both physical and psychological development of the target readers.Being systematic,scientific and specific,they provide multiple choices for young readers with different linguistic competence levels to promote and accelerate the development of their reading literacy.The thesis aims to explore the application of English graded readers as an supplementary material in reading teaching and to test its effects in improving students' English reading proficiency.In detail,the thesis explores two main issues:the principle of how to choose graded readers for both teachers and students;and strategies for reading and teaching graded readers inland out of class.The methodologies adopted in the thesis include literature review,teaching experiments,questionnaires and interview.Based on the data analysis of the experiment results by SPSS,the thesis attempted to offer some enlightenment and suggestions on graded readers for further study and teaching.The author chose 126 students from two classes she taught as the subjects in the experiment and randomly divided them into an experimental class and an control class.Before the experiment,the author conducted a questionnaire about the English learning in the experimental class.Meanwhile,the author asked both the teachers and students for their opinions on selecting graded readers used in classroom teaching.During the experiment,the author posed various questions on the presentation of vocabulary,grammar,sentence writing and speaking.Pre and post tests were carried out during the experiment for validity.Founded on the analysis of the results of the experiment,the thesis brought three conclusions: graded readers may help to improve the primary English reading teaching effectively.Firstly,graded readers can improve the student's language knowledge,which includes vocabulary,grammar and discourse.Graded readers can help studentsunderstand the meaning and usage of the words as well as enlarge their vocabulary;it can provide with a meaningful situation so that students can perceive the grammar or the sentence structures well,with the guide of the sentence structure,students learn to imitate the writing effectively;graded readers can also help the students have a better understanding of textual concept,so that they can comprehend the text and text structure better.Secondly,graded readers can help to improve the students reading and comprehension ability,especially the skills of predict,information retrieval and use of reading strategies.Thirdly,graded readers can help to cultivate the students cultural awareness,students can understand and explore the culture through reading,with the teacher's help,they can make a simple comparison between the Chinese and western cultures.
