A Comparative Study Of Relational-interdependent Self-construal, Adult Attachment And Intimate Relationship Quality Between American College Students And Chinese College Students

The writer, after carefully studied previous researchers and their limits, proposed a comparative study in respect of relational interdependent self construal, adult attachment and intimate relationship quality between college students of America and China respectively. It is hoped that the relationship between relational interdependent self construal, adult attachment and intimate relationship quality of American and Chinese college students can be sorted out through correlation analysis, regression analysis and mediation analysis.Random sampling out of a completed group will be utilized to obtain American research samples from Eastern Kentucky University and University of Lowa, and Chinese research samples from the universities in the east of China such as Hangzhou Normal University and Xinjiang University in the west. Also, Relational Interdependent Self Construal Scale(RISC), Experiences in Close Relationships Inventory(ECR) and Intimate Relationship Quality Questionnaire(IRQQ) have been used for the investigations on objects’ mentality and personality. The results are as follows:1. In respect of relational interdependent self construal: The relational interdependent self construal of American college students is significantly higher than Chinese college students; The relational interdependent self construal of female is significantly higher than male in American.2. In respect of types and dimensions of adult attachment: The attachment style Fear takes the highest proportion in both American and Chinese college students; The proportion of Fear in American is far lower than it in Chinese; The proportion of Secure in American is far higher than it in Chinese; The avoidant and anxiety tendencies of American are significantly lower than Chinese; The avoidant tendency of female is significantly higher than male in American, but the avoidant tendency of female is significantly lower thanmale in Chinese; The avoidant tendency of students without experience of love is significantly higher than those with experience in American; The anxiety tendency of students without experience of love is significantly lower than those with experience in Chinese.3. In respect of intimate relationship quality: The intimate relationship quality of American is significant better than Chinese; The intimate relationship quality of female is significant better than male in both nations; The intimate relationship quality of students without experience of love is significant better than those with experience in both nations; The intimate relationship quality of students, whose attachment style is Fear, is significant worse than others in both nations.4. There is negative relation, significantly, between relational interdependent self construal and attachment avoidance; There is positive relation, significantly, between relational interdependent self construal and attachment anxiety; There is positive relation, significantly, between relational interdependent self construal and intimate relationship quality. There is negative relation, significantly, between attachment avoidance and intimate relationship quality, and between attachment anxiety and intimate relationship quality.5. Multiple regression analysis shows that relational interdependent self construal, attachment avoidance and attachment anxiety might predict the intimate relationship quality under certain conditions. The relational interdependent self construal predicts intimate relationship quality, positively. The attachment avoidance and attachment anxiety predict intimate relationship quality, negatively; The relational interdependent self construal and attachment anxiety might predict the intimate relationship quality in American; The relational interdependent self construal and attachment avoidance might predict the intimate relationship quality in Chinese.6. After mediation analysis, it shows that attachment anxiety dimension partially mediate the relationship between relational interdependent self construal andintimate relationship quality in American; It also shows that attachment avoidance dimension partially mediate the relationship between relational interdependent self construal and intimate relationship quality in Chinese; In the relationship between relational interdependent self construal and intimate relationship quality, attachment avoidance dimension and attachment anxiety dimension are both partially mediated.
