Social rejection is a kind of social dilemma that often appears in the field of interpersonal communication, and it has a great influence on individual growth and development.Self-construal,determines how an individual perceives problems in social situations, including how to recognize social rejection, which may affect the individual’s social adaptation. In recent years, there have been many studies on social rejection in China, some of which have explored the relationship between social rejection and self-construal.However,few studies have focused on the impact of social rejection on the individual’s overall social adaptation,as well as whether and how self-construal plays its role. Therefore, this study conducted a series of hypotheses and experiments to explore the impact of short-term and long-term social rejection experiences on social adaptation of college students with different self-construal types. In the first study,400 questionnaires were collected to understand the social rejection,self-construction types and social adaptation of college students in their daily life, explore the relationship among them, and To examine the moderating role of self-constructed types in this relationship. The consequences state that social rejection is negatively correlated with positive adaptation and positively correlated with negative adaptation. In terms of the influence of social rejection and self-construction types on college students’ positive adaptation, and the interaction between social rejection and self-construction is significant. The simple effect analysis stated that different social rejection conditions had significant effects on positive adaptation at both the level of interdependent self-construction and the level of independent self-construction.In terms of the influence of rejection and self-construction types on college students’ negative adaptation, the interaction between social rejection and self-construction is not significant. The moderating effect of self-construction type on rejection and positive adaptation and negative adaptation was significant.Study two through situational experiment and questionnaire, choose the one out of 133 different types of individual development as subjects, under laboratory conditions short-term induce individual sense of social exclusion, with the method of questionnaire to understand individual emotions, aggression, social adaptation indexes such as interpersonal intention, explore the effect of social exclusion of social adaptation and self construction and research the effect of a.The results showed that the interaction effects of social exclusion grouping and self-construction grouping were both significant, that is,under the condition of social exclusion, the interdependent individuals had more positive emotions, less negative emotions, less aggressive behaviors, and stronger willingness to interact with others than the independent individuals.Research three on the basis of study two, choose study one out of 121 subjects, adopt and study two same experimental paradigm, the difference is to use the instructions to activate the situational self construction, comparison and research on the trait of self construction of the conclusions are consistent, which can take advantage of the situational activate individual help the individual better adapt to social development. The results of this study are consistent with the results of the second study, that is,in the social exclusion group, compared with the interdependent individuals, the independent individuals show lower positive emotions, higher negative emotions, more aggressive behaviors, and weaker willingness to interact with others. To sum up,the study draws the following conclusions:First, the more frequently an individual suffers from social exclusion, the lower the level of social adaptation.Second,self-construction types play a moderating role between social exclusion and social adaptation. After experiencing social exclusion, individuals with interdependent self-construction have stronger positive adaptation, weaker negative adaptation and higher overall social adaptation level, while individuals with independent self-construction have weaker positive adaptation, stronger negative adaptation and lower overall social adaptation level.Third, regardless of short-term social exclusion or long-term social exclusion, the social adaptation of interdependent self-constructed individuals is better than that of independent self-constructed individuals.Fourth, different situational priming of self-construction and different types of trait self-construction have the same effect on social adaptation in the context of social exclusion.By priming individual’s interdependent self-construction,individuals experiencing social exclusion can be helped to actively adapt to society. Some educational suggestions can be drawn from this study. On the one hand, college students should place themselves in the social network when understanding problems, stand in the perspective of others when thinking problems, and develop interdependent self-construction,so as to avoid the adverse effects of social exclusion on their body and mind.On the other hand,in the heart-to-heart conversation with students, college teachers should not only guide students not to exclude others, but also initiate their mutual self-construction through different methods for the excluded students,so as to better adapt to the society. |
