A Survey Of The Current Situation Of The Cooperative Learning In Senior High School English Teaching

Cooperative learning (CL) has enjoyed a great popularity in the modern Englishteaching theories. A lot of studies have shown that CL is helpful for the students’academic achievements, motivation, and affective factors. However, throughsearching the relevant studies, it shows that many of them did experimental studies orapplication studies about the effects of CL. But little of those studies are concerningabout current situation of CL, especially in senior high school English teaching, andthat is the significance of this thesis.The research questions of this thesis are:(1)What’s the current situation ofteachers’ CL concept and attitude?(2)What are the problems of CL in senior highschool English teaching? According to the two research questions, questionnaire andinterview are applied. The questionnaires include teachers questionnaire and studentsquestionnaire, and they are analysed by SPSS17.0. In addition,6teachers and6students from the3schools are interviewed, and the conversation is recorded withteachers’ permission. After the collection of interview data, the author begins toanalyse it. The research has found that most teachers have a positive and affirmativeattitude toward CL; most teachers can apply CL actively; most teachers would like toreceive more help from specialists so they can understand CL better; some teacherscan even give their own deep and creative understanding of CL. However, there aremany problems of CL in senior high school English teaching: the way to groupstudents is usually quite simple, which means that2front students and2backstudents form a group, but this way can not fully explore each student’s potential;lacking necessary teachers’ evaluation and group’s own evaluation; the content for CLis usually from the textbook which lacks creation and exploration; teachers are notclear about their roles in teaching.
