| With Chinese continuous grandness and its frequent foreign exchange, English, which is considered tobe the world language, attracts more and more attention in China. Every one hopes to speak fluently andaccurately. However, for the senior high school students, the dumb English exists among them whencommunicating, although they are learning English all the way. It seems that the senior high schoolstudents do not pay attention to the learning of speaking. Considering this, the author does a case study ofKaifeng No.2Experimental High School, and hopes that the results of this research can make contributionsto the teaching and learning of spoken English.In order to find some effective ways to improve students’ ability of speaking, this thesis studies thecurrent situation of spoken English. The research questions are:(1) What are the problems about students’spoken English language output in Kaifeng NO.2Experimental High School?(2) What are the currentsituations and problems of spoken English teaching and learning in Kaifeng NO.2Experimental HighSchool?(3) What are the effective methods to solve these problems and improve the students’ oral Englishcommunicative ability?This thesis adopts classroom observation and questionnaires to find the answers.The research participants are192students and15English teachers from Kaifeng No.2Experimental HighSchool. First, the author observes two classes and writes down and comments everything related to theEnglish language teaching and learning, and then, gives the questionnaires for students and teachersrespectively; and then the author collects and analyzes the data from classroom observation andquestionnaires; finally, according to the results of questionnaires and observation, the author gives somepractical recommendations and suggestions to improve the current situation of spoken English teachinglearning.The major findings of this thesis are:1. A big vocabulary is the base of good speaking.2. According tothe cultural difference, teachers can design daily oral conversation for students to train spoken English.3.The teachers can improve students’ ability of English discourse management gradually by talking the topicsfrom daily life activities.4. It is good to help students create an appropriate English language environment.5. Listening is quite important for students’ spoken English learning and should be given enough attention. 6. To value the quantity of authentic language input, first input, then output.7. To emphasize thecombination of listening, speaking, reading and writing.8. English teachers should create astudent-centered class during spoken English courses, and provide more chances and time for students tospeak in English.9To let students speak out, then help students “have something to sayâ€. That is to say, thetopics the students are practicing are pretty close to their life and knowledge background.10. The teachers’ability of spoken English teaching should be improved greatly.11. The good change of learningenvironment and the improvement of objective teaching condition will be of great value for Englishlearners.This thesis consists of five chapters. In introduction,the author gives the research background,motivation, objectives and the framework of this paper. Chapter two gives a brief literature review on thefeatures of speaking and the researches at home and abroad. Chapter three specifies research questions ofthis thesis, the research participants, methods, procedures and the collection of data. Chapter four is theresults and discussion of questionnaires and classroom observation. Then the author puts forward somemeasures to improve the current situation of spoken English teaching and learning. Major findings,pedagogical implications and limitations and prospects are included in the last chapter. |
