In the background of the new curriculum reform,cooperative learning in teaching of English reading in senior high schools is necessary for the practice of the new curriculum standard and is helpful for students to develop the language skills,learning strategies and emotional attitude of comprehensive application ability.Scholars at home and abroad have made a lot of useful discussions on cooperative learning and the teaching of English reading,which has laid a good foundation for future research.Most research is experiment on the effectiveness of cooperative learning in teaching English reading.However there are few studies on the situation and problems of cooperative learning in teaching of English reading.Moreover the research subject is often limited in one school,such as an university or a junior high school.Therefore,the research selects 5 senior high schools in Xuzhou to investigate how teachers apply cooperative learning in teaching of English reading.Under the guidance of the theory of cooperative learning and new curriculum standard,the author conducted a three-month investigation to explore 5 senior high schools' situation of cooperative learning in teaching of English reading in Xuzhou,in order to find the problems and help improve the teaching of English reading.Questionnaires are administered to the 230 students and 24 teachers and interviews were carried out between the author and teachers of the grade one of high school in Xuzhou.Meanwhile,class observation was proceeded in grade one of one high school.Based on the results from the investigation,the author did the data analysis with the help of Microsoft Office Excel.The data analysis generated the following findings:In the first place,the present situation of cooperative learning in teaching of English reading is that teachers divide 2-6 students next to each other into a grouprandomly to discuss the theme of an article in the while-reading step and post-reading step for 4-10 minutes,and students and teachers are all willing to take part in the cooperative learning,and teachers usually make evaluations on students' group performance.In the second place,the whole condition of teachers' cognition of cooperative learning is not good.Some teachers have poor cognition of the four elements of cooperative learning.The four elements are mixed grouping,group reflection and evaluation,positive interdependence,and interpersonal and group skills.Last,due to the lake of systemic learning and study on cooperative learning,there is the corresponding problems in the cooperative learning in teaching of English reading.The problems include fixed organization form in the cooperative learning activity,not explicit time spent on cooperative learning in teaching of English reading,teachers' partial understanding of content in cooperative learning in teaching of English reading,teacher's simple evaluation in cooperative learning in teaching of English reading and so on.
