In the middle of1980s, with the development of economy and the increase of need forlabor, more and more transients came from rural appeared in urban for working who were“Floating Army” transited from rural to urban which belongs to a special group named “RuralMigrant Worker”. Due to the limitation of dual economy between urban and rural, fertilityconcept and fertility behavior were impacted by the modern urban life strongly, who wereassimilated by the low fertility concept, meanwhile, consolidated by the traditional fertilitypreference which differ from original rural population and urban population in destination onthe fertility desire and childbearing behavior. That is the reason why the “Rural MigrantWorker” was called “Double Marginalized People” based on the limit of householdregistration between rural and urban. Therefore, decomposing the determinants of fertilitydesire in the rural migrant workers is benefit to examine the effect on the childbearingbehavior by migration, predict the subsequent childbearing behavior and future developmenttrend on the basis of current fertility desire which will provide the information to governmentfor policy-making, meanwhile, to examine the transition of fertility concept and childbearingbehavior after migration among the rural migrant workers accompanied with acceleratedsocial integration process, and then, explore the dynamic integration of migration theory andfertility theory and construct the whole analytical framework of migration/floating populationstudy on the basis of traditional fertility study improved. This research investigates the rural migrant workers in the middle route of south-to-northwater diversion project in Lin Cheng building site, and analyzes the characteristics of fertilitydesire from four aspects which are desired number of children, sex preference, ideal age atfirst childbearing, and the goal of birth. Descriptive analyses in this research examine therelationships between social, economic, cultural factors, etc. and three dimensionalcharacteristics of fertility desire, and multivariate statistical analyses decompose thedeterminants of three dimensional characteristics of fertility desire in the rural migrantworkers which further interpret the results of the empirical analysis and draw an importantconclusion. The result of descriptive analysis shows that desired number of children in the ruralmigrant workers is low because two children most wanted accounts for68.3%; half of ruralmigrant workers do not care about sex preference. Most of ideal ages at first childbearing in the rural migrant workers fall into the23-26age groups which related the age at firstchildbearing; Most of them wanted the birth interval between first child and second child with4-6years is the choice.Main conclusions of the empirical analyses are as follows. Existing number of children isan important determinants affecting on the three dimensional characteristics of fertility desirein the rural migrant workers. Because the existing number of children does not onlydetermines desired number of children, meanwhile, the existing number of children(especially the number of daughter), but also inhibits sex preference with one son and onedaughter and ideal age at first childbearing. Age is the key factor to restrain the realization offertility desire through inhibiting desired number of children and ideal age at firstchildbearing in the rural migrant workers. Traditional concept of fertility which wascharacterized by son preference and the goal of birth as served for continuation of familybloodline and support for elder people has been transformed into the modern concept offertility gradually which will characterized by sex preference with one son and one daughterdepended on marriage and desired number of children, whereas, sex preference for having sonwas still intense in the rural migrant workers.
