Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of The 7^th Chapter Of Racial And Ethnic Relations From The Perspective Of Peter Newmark’s Translation Theory

This is a report on the translation of the 7th Chapter of Racial and Ethnic Relations written by Joe R. Feagin. In this chapter, the author introduces and discusses the history and situations of Native Americans from seven aspects: Conquest by Europeans and Euro-Americans, Racist Images and Stereotypes, Politics, Protest and Conflict, Economy, Education and Religion. Studying the history and current situation of United State’s ethnic groups and measures taken by its government may provide some suggestions for dealing with Chinese ethnic issues, maybe even can benefit the global studies of ethnic groups, although ethnic problems in the two countries are fundamentally different.Peter Newmark is an English theoretician in the field of translation; according to his theory of text typology, texts are divided into three distinctive types: expressive text, informative text and vocative text. Racial and Ethnic Relations is a history treatise which gives us a whole map of racial and ethnic issues of the United States. This text is typical informative text. As for the translation strategy, communicative translation is adopted in the translation process. Newmark holds that communicative translation, “where the translator attempts to produce the same effect on the target language readers as was produced by the original on the SL readers”. The translator benefits a lot under the guidance of communicative translation in this project.The paper consists of two chapters. Chapter One includes the source text and the translated text. Chapter Two is the report, which consists of five parts. Part one is a general introduction consisting of the background of the task, significance of the project, and layout of the report. Part two is an introduction to the source text, consisting of introduction to the original book, the contents of source text and the features of the language used. Part three is about pre-translation and translation strategies. Part four is case studies in three aspects: linguistic factor, cultural factor and the translation of names and institutions. The last part is a conclusion, including unsolved problems and experiences.
