On Translation Chaos Of C-E Translated Wushu Terms In Cha Li’s Martial Fictions And Countermeasures

Under the background of globalization, Chinese wushu is now introduced and spread to the outside world like the other Chinese cultures. The transmission of wushu culture starts from translating wushu terms. However, there exist many translation problems in wushu term translation, which will hamper the intercultural communication. Based on the Relevance Theory, this thesis studies the translation of wushu terms in Cha Li’s C-E translated martial fictions. Then, this thesis has found out such three translation chaos problems as (1) the diversified translated versions of the same terms, (2) mistranslation of the cultural visualized images and (3) overdependence on literal translation. This thesis probes into the causes of the problems:(1) the lack of the unified translated versions of wushu terms, (2) the difference between the Chinese culture and the English culture and (3) misapplication of the translation methods to the wushu term translation. After discussing the causes, this thesis proposes such three countermeasures as (1) unification of the same wushu category, (2) different treatments toward different visualized images (for the terms with images borrowing from the folklores and for the terms with images mimicking the motions of animals) and (3) adoption of the comprehensive translation method. Under the guidance of Relevance Theory, this thesis has worked hard on overcoming the translation chaos problems of C-E translated wushu terms and putting forward three translation countermeasures for solving these translation problems.
