A Study On Chinese-English Translation Of Wushu Terms In The Context Of Cultural Globalization

In today's large background of cultural globalization, together with the arrival of economic globalization, in the context of different cultures increasingly infiltration, people's need for foreign cultures not only tops to the most, but also makes it necessary to find a proper means to transmit traditional cultures. As a result, translation, which is endowed with new responsibility of internationalizing traditional cultures, with new characteristics of carrying the imprint of both the source and the target language cultures by the cultural globalization, has been proved the best choice.In terms of the "cultural shift" in translation study since 1980s, translating Wushu terms, which can best represent the cultures of religion, Chinese literature, strategies, Chinese medicine, Chinese philosophy and artistry within Wushu culture, from Chinese to English, which now exists as the global lingua franca, is the best way to spread Wushu culture into the whole world. In this thesis, the author tries to discuss how to deal with the cultural problems and how to find proper translation principles, strategies, methods, standards on the conditions of analyzing cultural globalization and translation, introducing Wushu's historical and current situation, and summarizing the linguistic features of Wushu terms.Specifically, the author briefly introduces the motivation, objectives, significance and framework of the thesis in chapter one. In chapter two, the author specifically analyzes the inevitable trend of cultural globalization, points out the most two typical features: English as the global lingua franca and intercultural communication, studies the changing of translation's definition and the relationship between translation and cultural globalization and lists the effect of cultural globalization on translators, translation thinking, translation strategies and translation standards. In chapter three, the author mainly studies Wushu and Wushu terms, including the history of Wushu, Wushu's concept and status, the relationship between Wushu and Shaolin Temple, Wushu and Jin Yong's martial arts novels, Wushu and movies, Wushu and Olympics, Wushu terms and Chinese language. The author also summarizes three main features of Wushu terms: archaism, philosophical connotation, unity of content and form. In chapter four, after discussing the obstacles resulting from cultural blanks, chaos in translation versions, and unique Chinese cultural connotations in the Chinese-English translation of Wushu terms in the context of cultural globalization, the author gives the view that all the following translation factors should be applied under the support of cultural translation represented by Susan Bassnett and Andre Lefevere, intercultural communication theory under the large context of cultural globalization. These factors include the translation principle of preserving the characteristics of Chinese cultures, transmitting, professionalism and acceptability; the translation strategies of foreignization, domestication, and hybridization; the standard of equivalence.The main striking points of this thesis are putting the studying target—Wushu terms which are more and more important in intercultural communications under the background of cultural globalization, applying the theory of intercultural communication and many other translation factors in the Chinese-English translation of Wushu terms for the better spreading of Chinese cultures.
