A Study Of C/E Translation Of Wushu Terms--From The Perspective Of Intercultural Communication

Wushu, which is one of China's cultural gems, in more than 2000 years' history, has been developed together with many other cultural forms such as religion, Chinese philosophy, military affairs, Chinese medicine and artistry into a special national sport event. However, those characteristics which make wushu somewhat of a "special, local product" also make it very difficult not only for foreigners to understand, but also for interpreters at home to translate into other languages. The inadequacy of C/E translation of wushu terms hinders the communication of wushu to a certain extent, because the C/E translation of wushu terms is one of the ways of spreading wushu. Although its function cannot be overstated, translation plays an active part in spreading wushu. In addition, language is the carrier of culture, and translation is a bridge of intercultural communication, so C/E translation of wushu terms is a process of spreading Chinese culture as well. This thesis tries to probe into the C/E translation of wushu terms on the lexical level through an intercultural communication approach. And the body of this thesis is divided into five parts.Part one is the introduction. Since more and more attention has been paid to the theory of intercultural communication, the author proposes that the intercultural communication theory be introduced into C/E translation of wushu terms to help translators reinforce intercultural consciousness when they translate wushu terms into English.In part two, starting from the origin and evolution of wushu, the author states that wushu has close relation with many other ancient cultural forms of China. It is thus evident that wushu is part of the traditional Chinese culture. Furthermore, wushu terms, as the language carrier of wushu and as a medium of spreading wushu, undoubtedly are loaded with the Chinese culture. So in essence, wushu term translation is also a process of intercultural communication.In part three, the relationships between culture and communication, culture and language, as well as intercultural communication and translation are examined, because essentially, translation, as communication between languages, is a process of cultural transmission as well as language exchange.In part four, firstly, the author expounds the feasibility and necessity of wushu term translation from the perspective of intercultural communication. Then the author explains that cultural obstacles in wushu term translation mainly result from three aspects: cultural blanks and cultural conflicts as well as the words that can find expressions in English identical in association, but different in designative meanings. From this point of view, C/E translation of wushu terms not only conveys designative meaning, but also transmits connotative meanings of wushu terms. Based on the intercultural communication theory, the author proposes that translators should follow the standards of accuracy and appropriateness in wushu term translation according to their features. Finally, several constructive translation strategies are brought forth respectively.In accordance with the above arguments, the author concludes that wushu carries cultural connotation, which provides an objective base for a study of C/E translation of wushu terms from an intercultural perspective. Maybe, the theory of intercultural communication cannot cover all the translation phenomena, nor can it help solve all the problems in wushu term translation, but it can help the translators sharpen their awareness of the cultural obstacles in intercultural communication.
