This thesis takes the all 12 volumes of “Chinese Reader for Filipinos(Elementary)” as the object of the study, analyzing the new words of this book mainly from the number, level, repetition rate, meaning and exercise by quantitative and qualitative analysis. Based on the above study, it draws the following conclusions:First, based on “The Graded Chinese Syllables, Characters and Words for the Application of Teaching Chinese to the Speakers of Other Languages” for a reference, it is found that the textbook has an appropriate setting on the number of vocabularies and reappearing of new vocabularies, while the rate of in-outline is low, emerging too many out-of-outline words, taking 26.1% of the total new words. It is appropriate to improve the rate of in-outline words in the textbook, reducing the ratio of out-of-outline words.Second, the meaning of new words, it is found that there are some problems in the “Chinese Reader for Filipinos(Elementary)”. For instance, the single explanation of words, no label of part–of-speech and some unscientifically explain on words’ semantic and pragmatic aspects. To solve these problems, this thesis put forward kinds of countermeasures, such as the diversification of definition mode, adding part-of-speech tagging and making it accurate, accurate definition and conforming to the context, adding annotations and collocations.Third, the exercises of new words, it is found that the amount of exercises in the“Chinese Reader for Filipinos(Elementary)”is reasonable, not only exercises in class have been designed, but also after-class exercises and the types of exercises are also varied and abundant. However, in the distribution of question types, I think the “new words drill” should be reduced and the amount of question type of “words drill in specific situations” should be increased with the deepening of study.At last, this thesis gives several teaching methods according to the new words teaching of “Chinese Reader for Filipinos(Elementary)”:Body Language Teaching Method, Object and Picture Teaching Method, Music Teaching Method, Context Teaching Method, Formula Teaching Method and designing summary class new words. This thesis attempts to give advice on The Philippine primary schools’ Chinese vocabulary teaching and hopes that the editors and readers take correct views on the textbook and inspire new ideas in reediting the textbook.
