Zhang Ailing’s novels have long been known as“paper films”.In recent years,Zhang’works have been frequently adapted for films and television,which caused different comments ranging from praise to criticism.By the research method of the science of mass media,the science of literature and art and the science of culture and so on,this thesis introduces theories of text,theories of words and theories of symbols,conducts a comparative study of Zhang’s novels and the adapted films and television based on her novels,analyzes the restoration of the novels from the films and television,the breakthrough in the films as well as the success and failure in them.In the introduction,the author makes a review based on several films and television adapted from Zhang’s novels,carding and comments the current research home and abroad,especially focuses on the related achievements of study between Zhang’s novels and the adapted films and television,pointing out the necessity and feasibility of making thorough research in Zhang’s novels and the adapted films and television based on her novels.In the first chapter,the author mainly demonstrates that Zhang’s novels were influenced by the art of contemporary films,arguing that Zhang’s writing techniques were influenced by those of the films,had the style of imitation,and formed a fantasy of“overseas Utopia”due to the influence of a perspective of the eastern cultural space by the western culture.In the second chapter,the author centers on analyzing the comparison of novels with films and television,holding that Zhang’s novels have a unique plot structure,such as plot romanticism,structure completeness,anti-climax,etc,while in films and television based on the original works,there is a reconstruction of plots of the novels,a change of the narrating modes of the novels and a reorganization of the plot structure of the original novels in terms of time and space.In the third chapter,a comparison is made between characters in films and television with those in the original novels.The author believes that Zhang created in her novels a variety of typical characters of a certain historical period,who have a distinct personality,a unique fate and life course,whereas there are some differences between films as well as television and the original works in terms of character portrayal,and psychological reflection,and there is also some adaptation in terms of fate designing.Starting from the differences in dealing with details between films as well as television and the original works,the author analyzes the uniqueness of details such as language,dialogues,images,etc,and makes a corresponding analysis of the designing of dialogues and asides,the designing of scenes,the designing of color,the designing of clothing and stage properties,organizing frames,constructing frames,the designing of details of films and television,holding that those features of the original works are restored to some extent in films and television,although there are some differences in the designing of details.In the part of conclusion,the author expounds her view on how to both adhere to the adaptation principle of literariness and artistry and develop,from a view of the cultural market,strategies of adaptation, based on realistic conditions.
