Although films and literature are two different kinds of media, and two sorts of arts as well, they are combined together skillfully by the tie of flim adaptation. This article attempts to analyze the movies which are adapted from Zhang Ailing's novels under various historical background, to look for the change of the theme between the novels and the films, the identification of the characters, the addition and deletion of the plots, the change of narrative angle, and the effect of the particular style of the directors, etc. They are not merely due to the development of the films themselves, or the personal experience of the directors. They will fall into the tide of history and bear a strong mark of the trend of social culture unavoidably.This paper includes three parts: introduction, body and conclusion.The first part is the introduction. This part is to discuss the necessityand the feasibulity for the film adaptation of Zhang Ailing's novels ,andthe methods for the adaptation. And to summarize the research literatureof Zhang Ailing's novels and the film adaptation of Zhang Ailing's novels.The second part is the body. It has been divided into three parts: Partâ… :In the first stage ( The 1980s) the film adaptation of Zhang Ailing'snovels, to analyze respectively the two films of Love in a Fallen City andRouge of the North, and the differences and similarities between the novels and the films; and summarize the general picture of their adaptation: To imitate the original work step by step; Partâ…¡:In the second stage (The 1990s)the film adaptation of Zhang Ailing's novels, to analyze respectively the three films of Red Rose White Rose,Eight Springs and Flowers of Shanghai, and the differences and similarities between the novels and the films; and summarize the general picture of their adaptation: In foundation of respecting the original work ,to manifestate individual style of directs; Partâ…¢: In the third stage (The 21th Century) film adaptation of Zhang Ailing's novels, to analyze the similarities and differences of the film "Lust, Caution" and the novel, and summarize the general picture of its adaptation: Faithful to the original work,to innovate and surpass.Conclusion: To summarize essential features of the film adaptation of Zhang Ailing's novles: (1) subject significance and overall style: Stick to and deviate from; (2) plot: From complex to simple, and, from simple to complex; (3) character image: Callous and softhearted. As well as to reorganize the places of the film adaptation of Zhang Ailing's novles should be paid attention and avoided.
