The source text is an academic research paper titled Children’s Understanding of Directed Motion Events in an Imitation Choice Task, which is coauthored by Laura Wagner, Anna and Maia Green-Havas. The article accounts for children’s understanding of directed motion events, thus launching the related investigation. Most children showed no bias to imitate the goal of the event and, instead, preferred to imitate the model’s path at the expense of the model’s goal. The researchers concluded that children’s prioritization of information within an event depends on how that information is structured within the event itself. As a type of informative text, the source text is an academic research paper, which aims at transmitting information to the readers. Considering both the text type and the potential target readers, the translator decided to resort to communicative translation theory and semantic translation theory put forward by Peter Newmark. Based on the theoretical framework, this report introduces and analyzes the problems in the process of translation, attempting to integrate the best way to combine the translation theory and informative text. The report is composed of four chapters. Chapter One is the introduction to the translation project, including the project background, the project objective, the project significance, and the project structure. Chapter Two is concerning the background of project, including theoretical basis, main contents of the source text and analysis of the source text. Chapter Three embraces project preparation, translation difficulties and key translation methods. Chapter Four concludes with enlightenments and unsolved problems in this translation project.
