A Report On The Chinese-english Translation Of X Truck Manual (Excepts)

With the acceleration of globalization and the rapid development of China’s economy,more and more domestic enterprises begin to market Chinese products to overseas markets.For China’s automobile industry,it has become an irresistible trend to build the overall advantage of China’s automobile brand market by continuously building automobile industrial parks around the world and co-building overseas after-sales service centers.Translation is important for the dissemination of international information,and it is also an important task for translators to accurately transmit China’s sci-tech information to foreign readers.Based on the author’s translation practice and guided by Newmark’s theory of communicative translation and semantic translation,this report aims to provide some inspirations for the same type of text translation.This report is a summary of the author’s translation of X Truck Manual in an automobile company.There is no English version of X Truck Manual.Translator chooses the third part of the cab and complete the translation report,the text gives a detailed description about the cab of X truck.Practical texts are authoritative and normative,sci-tech English belongs to a strip of practical texts,apart from the authority and normality,sci-tech English often contains a large number of professional terms and passive sentences.In this report,through the analysis of text types and the characteristics of the target audience,Newmark’s theory of communicative translation and semantic translation is applied to guide the practice.Concepts and features of sci-tech text are analyzed and summarized during my translation.The features of lexical translation and syntactic translation are explored under the guidance of communicative translation and semantic translation.First of all,the semantic translation emphasizes the accuracy and fidelity of translation.For informational text,faithfulness and accuracy are very important.At the semantic level,the translation requires accuracy,smoothness and conciseness,especially for some professional terms and polysemy,which puts forward high requirements for the author and translator.Secondly,as for the translation problems in sentences,translators try to use the methods of linear translation,reverse translation,combined translation,voice conversion,synthesized translation and other methods to solve these problems,and ensure the smoothness and clarity of the translation.The translated text must be faithful to the original text and translator must take account into the reader’s feelings according to Newmark’s translation theory.These two points are also the guiding principles in the translation report.This report is divided into four chapters.The first chapter is task description,which mainly introduces the translation background,translation requirements,translation purposes and the text structure of the X Truck Manual.The second chapter describes the translation process,which is divided into three stages: pre-translation,while-translation and after-translation.The third chapter is the focus of the report,which mainly summarizes the application of communicative translation theory and semantic translation theory.At the same time,combining with the examples in the text,it mainly relies on the semantic translation at the lexical level to ensure the accurate and reasonable translation of proper nouns and polysemy.At the syntactic level,follow the communicative translation and adopt linear translation,reverse translation,combined translation,voice conversion and synthesized translation to ensure the fluency and readability of the translation.The last chapter summarizes the achievements and shortcomings in the translation process.The purpose of this report is to explore translation methods of truck manuals under the guidance of Newmark’s translation theory and to provide some reference and guidance for the same text.
