This is a translation project report. The original text is extracted from Dimensionsof Tourism written by Joseph D. Fridgen. There are two parts in the book. Oneintroduces six dimensions relative to tourism focusing on some elements which haveeffects on decisions, families, social situations, dispositions and orientations of touristsin the world. Social and culture dimension, and international dimension are applied intothe translation project. The other part examines the services and tools available to assistindustry professionals in managing and understanding tourism activity. In the report,according to text typology of Newmark, the original text belonging to informativefunction text guided by his text categorizations is confirmed. To convey information is amain characteristic of informative function text, in other words, text contents areemphasized. The words adopted in the original are professional and abstract; thelanguage is plain and serious; and the content is objective and mainly reflects facts.Because of these characteristics, it is very critical to learn the original’s information andunderstand the original’s contents for readers. According to this point, informationconveyed is through language, culture and pragmatic forms of the target language so asto be inclined to feelings of the target language readers. Under the guidance of text typeand characteristics of the original, domestication method predominates over theforeignization method. In the report, case analyses for applications of translation strategies are based on three aspects, namely, words, sentences and dialogues.Furthermore, three translation techniques are listed to enhance the informative texttranslation. |
