| This translation report is based on English-Chinese translation of a SCI paper entitled Plaintive Cuckoos do not Select the Tailorbird Hosts that Match the Phenotypes of Their Own Eggs. The translation project was commissioned by Jiang,a student of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the full text is about 10,000 words. It was an experiment on cuckoo parasitism. This academic paper is an experiment with professional vocabulary in biology as well as long and difficult sentences, and with strong logic. This report explores 3major topics: vocabulary including experimental acronyms and polysemes, clauses including objective clauses and attributive clauses, and passive sentences.Peter Newmark proposed the text type theory, and academic paper translation is an informative function text. The report summarizes the translation strategies of the 3problems according to the theory. For translation at the lexical level, direct translation is adopted to accurately convey the original information. For the objective clauses with a short sentence length and a simple structure, linear translation is adopted. For the objective clauses with long sentences and a complex structure, division translation is used. The attributive clauses(about 8 words and below)are translated by front-loading translation, the longer attributive clauses are back-loading translation;passive sentences, when the recipient of the action is emphasized,in order to retain the emphasis of the original sentence, the passive form is retained. When there is no actor, with modal verbs, the sentences are translated into Chinese sentences without subject, and the remaining passive sentences are translated into active sentences that Chinese prefers to use. This report aims to summarize the translation methods of translation problems in academic papers, including vocabulary and sentence levels,to ensure the efficiency and quality of the translation process, therefore, some reference for future translation of academic papers can be provided. |
