The source text of the translation report is the famous academic work: ABiography of the English Language by the famous American scholars C.M. Millwardand Mary Hayes. The translator focuses on Chapter9English around the World, thefull text of which is about10,000words for English-Chinese translation practice underthe guidance of her supervisor. The report is firstly focused on the analysis anddiscussion of some mistakes and difficulties during the translation process. Then thetranslation techniques and solutions are discussed according to the problems above. The translator selects Newmark’s “communicative translation” theory to guide thetranslation practice. By reviewing the translation process and analyzing typical cases, the report explores two problems: First, under the guidance of proper translationtheories, translator should analyze the features of both source text and target text.Preparatory works before translation may be done well to get familiar with the readers’accepting abilities. Second, translator may use translation theories and sometranslation skills to make the translation is close to source text. At the same time, translator should consider the readers’ expressions adequately, so as to achieve thegreatest communication with them.Through the task description and case analysis, the following conclusions aredrawn from the study: First, translator must make full preparations before translation.Pre-translation preparation is related to the process and the quality of translationclosely. Second, translator should understand and analyze source text, which need theassistance of the translation theories and translation skills to avoid omissions anderrors during translation. At the same time, based on the background of the culturaland sentential differences between the East and the West, translator should try his bestto avoid colloquial phenomenon, as well as to improve the quality of translation on thewhole.
