BackgroundCervical cancer is one of the most frequent malignant tumors in female and serious harmful to women’s health. Surgery is one of the main treatment of early cervical cancer, but to those patients with high-risk factors for recurrence, they still need adjuvant radiotherapy or concurrent radiochemotherapy after surgery. As the mean age of onset tends to be younger, they have higher requirement on quality of life after treatment. As the adverse reaction and severe complications caused by radiotherapy or concurrent radiochemotherapy affect the quality of life, many scholars are exploring the clinical value of chemotherapy as an effective treatment for those early cervical cancer patients with high-risk factors for recurrence, and they find that there is no significant difference in curative effect compared with radiotherapy or concurrent radiochemotherapy. In our study, we use questionnaire to evaluate the quality of life of early cervical cancer patients with high-risk factors for recurrence, both before surgery and one year after the adjuvant therapy. After compare the impact of different adjuvant therapy, chemotherapy and radiochemotherapy, on quality of sex life, we discuss the clinical value of postoperative chemotherapy as adjuvant therapy from another perspective.ObjectivesTo investigate impact of different types of adjuvant therapy on the quality of sex life of postoperative patients with cervical cancer..Methods62 patients of stage IB-IIA, who underwent radical hysterectomy, were enrolled in this study. FSFI (Female Sexual Function Index) was used to score the quality of sex life of the patients who were enrolled before the operation and one year after the adjuvant therapy in order to analyze the impact of chemoradiotherapy and chemotherapy on quality of sex life of patients with cervical cancer.ResultsOne year after finishing the whole therapy, the quality of sex life was significantly lower than that of before the surgery in terms of sexual desire, sexual arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain(P<0.05). The quality of sex life was lower in patients treated with chemoradiotherapy after surgery than those who were treated with chemotherapy in terms of sexual arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain (P <0.05). However, it showed no significant difference in the decrease of sexual desire. The quality of sex life of patients with ovary conservation was higher in those who were treated with chemotherapy after surgery than those who were treated with chemoradiotherapy in terms of sexual arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction and pain (P<0.05). However, it still showed no significant difference in the decrease of sexual desire.ConclusionsThe application of Chemotherapy alone after surgery has less impact on the quality of sex life of early cervical cancer patients with high risk factors for recurrence. And reserving ovaries should be done as possible as we can in those young patients with cervical squamous carcinoma.
