Objective1.To investigate present situation and characteristics of emotional intelligence,Perso-nality characteristics and conflict handling mode of psychiatric nurses in Shandong Province.2.To investigate the effects of emotional intelligence and personality characteristics on conflict mode instrument among psychiatric nurses in shandong province.The research would provide theoretical basis for relevant training courses of conflict management and emotional management, provide a theoretical basis for the psychiatric nurse training program settings.MethodsTotally,813 psychiatric nurses in six psychiatric hospitals of Shandong Province were recruited.They were assessed with general information questionnaire,Emotional Intel-ligence Scale(EIS),Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ) and The Conflict Mana-gement Instrument(MODE). All statistical analysis was performed by SPSS 17.0 sta-tistical software.The statistical methods including general descriptive analysis,t-test One-Way ANOVA analysis and LSD test,Pearson correlation analysis and multiple stepwise regression analysis.The test level (a) is 0.05.Results1.According to the psychiatric nurses’conflict management score, in turn from high to low is accommodation, avoiding, compromising,competition,collaborating.On univariate ana-lyse of psychiatric nurses’ conflict management,the type of conflict handling of clinical psychiatric nurses differences in age, yearsjob title, gender and marital status. In the three dimensions of avoiding, accommodation, competition, reached a statistically significant level(P all<0.05).2.Emotional intelligence of psychiatric nurses were in the upper middle level. According to the psychiatric nurses’ conflict management score, in turn from high to low is others emo-tional understanding score,emotion regulation score,emotion utilization score,emotional perception score. The emotional intelligence total score of psychiatric nurses differences in age, titles (P<0.05). Multiple regression analysis showed that education, gender and years of working were related factors of psychiatric nurses’emotional intelligence.3.Compared with the norms, psychiatric nurses’EPQ scored significantly higher in the dimension of Extraversion(E),and lower in the dimension of Neuroticism(N) and Lie(L)(P all<0.01).Each dimension of personality characteristics differences in demographic characteristics (P<0.05).Combining of the subcacle E and N,it can form four kinds of tendency personality types:extroverted-instabe,extroverted-stable,introverted-stable, introverted-instable.Conflict hangding modes are significantly different from psychiatric nurses with different personality characteristics (P<0.01).4.The correlation analysis of emotional intelligence,EPQ,conflict handling:The relation between avoiding and dimension of Extraversion(E) were negatively correlated. Compe-tition, dimension of Neuroticism(N) and subscale of psychoticism(P) were positively correlated.Competition and each dimension of emotional intelligence were negatively correlated. Accommodation, P and E were negatively correlated. Accommodation L and EIS were positively correlated.Compromising,E, emotional understanding and emotion regulation were negatively correlated.Collaborating emotional understanding and emotion regulation were positively correlated.5.Multivariate hierarchical regression analysis:Working years,age and E were the significant predictors of avoiding; P,E,L,education,gander,age and emotional understanding significant predictors of competing; P,E and emotional understanding significant predictors of accommodation;E and emotional understanding significant predictors of compromising and collaborating.Conclusion:1.When faced with conflict,the psychiatric nurses commonly used accommodation,the most unusual way is competition.2.Emotional intelligence of psychiatric nurses were in the upper middle level. While the dimension of others emotional understanding got the highest score,and emotional perception got the lowest score.3.Compared with the norms, psychiatric nurses’ EPQ scored significantly higher in the dimension of E,and lower in the dimension of N and L.Stable type was the main type of personality characteristics.The extroverted-stable accounted for 41.8%,and introverted-stable accounted for 22.5%.4.Demographic characteristics,emotional intelligence and personality characteristics were the significant predictors of conflict handling mode of psychiatric nurses.5.The managers should conduct conflict and emotion training courses to develop the ability of resolve conflicts and emotional management of psychiatric nurses. The pur-pose is to enhance their mental health and cultivate the personality of extroverted-stable.
