ObjectivesWith the development of nursing science, nursing team is becoming stronger. Nursing managers are paying more attention to the physical and mental health of the nursing staff to improve the quality of nursing work. This research combined quantitative study with qualitative study to describe the status of pediatric nurses’ compassion fatigue, analyzed the correlated influence factors and concluded the corresponding method with which nurses used to cope with the compassion fatigue. The conclusion of this study will provide scientific basis for nurse managers to formulate more humanized management plan to lower compassion fatigue level. Methods1.quantitative study: Make a survey of 300 pediatric nurses in 4 third-level A-rate hospitals in Changchun during June to November 2015. The research subjects are extracted by convenience sampling. The questionnaire consists of 3 parts, they are General Information Questionnaire, Professional Quality of Life, Social Support Rating Scale. The data are typed with Epidata3.1, and analysed with SPSS19.0. In descriptive analysis, measurement data is presented in ±S,Count data is presented in frequency and percentage. The variance analysis was used for statistical analysis. Correlation analysis of Pearson coefficient method was used to elaborate the relationship between nurse’s compassion fatigue level and social support. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to describe the influence factors of the compassion fatigue of pediatric nurses.2.qualitative study: Make a survey of 8 pediatric nurses in 4 third-level A-rate hospitals in Changchun during November to December 2015. The research subjects are extracted using objective sampling method.The interview questions consist of 2 parts: The influencing factors of compassion fatigue in pediatric nurses and the measures they took to reduce compassion fatigue level. Data collection was carried out by semi structured depth interview, Colaizzi seven step analysis method was used for data processing. Results1.The average score of Secondary Trauma Stress, Burnout and Compassion Satisfaction were(28.48±6.64),(27.49±5.72),(31.36±7.52). Nurses in Medium level of Secondary Trauma Stress, Burnout and Compassion Satisfaction were 73.85%, 79.15%, 75.62% respectively.2. The total score of social support was(40.82±6.75). The score of Subjective support, objective support, the use of support was(23.27±3.99),(9.31±3.29),(8.24±1.77) respectively.3.The result of Single factor analysis showed that department, years in nursing, monthly income, title, the interest in nursing influenced pediatric nurses’ Secondary Trauma Stress significantly; Age, years in nursing, monthly income, post, post staffing, marriage status, child status, the interest in nursing, choosing nursing as a career or not influenced pediatric nurses’ Burnout significantly; Age, highest education, years in nursing, monthly income, title, child status, the interest in nursing, choosing nursing as a career or not influenced pediatric nurses’ compassion satisfaction significantly.4.The result of multi factor analysis showed that department and monthly income influenced pediatric nurses’ Secondary Trauma Stress; Marriage status, the interest in nursing, social support influenced pediatric nurses’ Burnout; Age, the interest in nursing, social support influenced pediatric nurses’ compassion satisfaction.5.The result of qualitative study showed that work responsibility, vocational skills, work environment, work-related risk, treatment are influencing factors of pediatric nurses’ compassion fatigue, working power, self regulation, strengthen support system are the measures they took to cope with high level compassion fatigue. Conclusions1.The level of Secondary Trauma Stress and Burnout in pediatric nurses are relatively low and Compassion Satisfaction is relatively high, the total score of compassion fatigue is in the lower middle level. The total score of social support is in the higher middle level.2.The influencing factors of are different in each dimensions of compassion fatigue. The influencing factors of Secondary Trauma Stress are department and monthly income; The influencing factors of burnout are marriage status, interest in nursing, social support; The influencing factors of compassion satisfaction are age, interest in nursing, social support. In addition, work responsibility, vocational skills, work environment, work-related risk and treatment can also influence the level of compassion fatigue in pediatric nurses.3.The coping strategies of Compassion Fatigue are: searching for the working power, self regulation, improve and make full use of support system.
