ObjectiveThere are three aims of the study. First, to investigate the status of professional quality of life among ICU nurses in3A hospitals of Ji’nan. Second, to analyze how demographic data, work environment, and social support effect ICU nurses’ professional quality of life. Third, to investigate the influencing factors of professional quality of life among ICU nurses.MethodsA across-sectional study was performed. Totally235ICU nurses were recruited from three3A hospitals in Ji’nan, China by convenience sampling method during August2012to September2012. They were investigated with demographic questionnaire, Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL-V), Practice Environment Scale(PES) and Social Support Rating Scale(SSRS). Descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, analysis of variance, multivariate linear regression were used for data analysis.Results1.261study questionnaires were distributed(valid questionnaires235), and the effective rate was90.01%.2. The raw scores of compassion satisfaction (CS), burnout (BO) and secondary trauma stress (STS) were31.30±6.14,26.07±5.53,25.26±4.99respectively, which means bad condition of professional quality of life.3. The ICU nurses had approving work environment and the score of PES was79.43±11.36. The higher score of PES, the higher score of CS and the lower score of CF would be.4. The total score of SSRS was40.23±6.493, and objective support score subjective support score and support utilization score was9.73±2.962,22.23±4.076,8.27±1.519respectively, which means that ICU nurses has moderate social support. The total social support score and its three dimensions were correlated with CS positively and with BO negatively.5. ICU nurses’ Pro-QOL was influenced by their demographic data. Older nurses had lower CS and higher BO; nursing experience≤1year had higher CS; nurses with bachelor degree had the highest BO; married nurses had higher BO; nurses who were competent with job had lower BO and STS; nurses who had approving relationship with patients had higher CS, lower BO and STS.6. Multiple regression was used to analyze factors that influencing Pro-QOL. Relationship with patients, participating in hospital affairs and SSRS were influencing factors of CS; physician-nurse cooperation, education background and SSRS were influencing factors of BO; physician-nurse cooperation was influencing factor of STS.Conclusions1. The level of ProQOL of ICU nurses was bad with lower CS and higher CF.2. The level of ProQOL of ICU nurses was influenced by demographic data, such as:nurses’age, nursing experience, education background, marital status, the relationship with patients and competency.3. The ICU nurses had approving work environment. The higher score of PES, the higher score of CS and the lower score of CF would be.4. ICU nurses has moderate social support. The higher score of SSRS, the higher CS and lower BO would be.5. Physician-nurse cooperation, education background, nursing practice environment and social support were the influencing factors of ICU nurses’ProQOL. Nursing managers should pay attention to nurse’s Pro-QOL and take targeted interventions to improve Pro-QOL of ICU nurses according to various influencing factors.
