Objective:To explore the therapeutic and preventive efficacy of thermal moxibustion combined with auricular point therapy on postoperative complications of external dissection and internal ligation hemorrhoidectomy such as anal pain, urinary retention and perianal edema so as to offer a novel way to apply external therapy of Chinese Medicine in treating these complications.Methods:60 cases with mixed hemorrhoid were randomly divided into treatment group(n=30) and control group(n=30). Both of which were treated with external dissection and internal ligation hemorrhoidectomy. Thermal moxibustion was used on acupoints detected by indistinct location in the treatment group 0.5 hour after operation and 1.5 hours before dressing change. Which coupled with auricular point pressing on Shenmen,,Pizhixia,Shen,Gangmen,Pangguang,Sanjiao and Jiaogan for 4 seconds each time and 6 times in a cycle of an interval of 30 mins till it enabled the subjects to perceive ears redness, fever, numbness and swelling. In contrast, the control group received routine therapy. After these treatment,to investigate the occurrence, degree and duration of complications including pain happened after operation and during dressing change, analgesic usage, urinary retention, urination, lower abdominal symptoms, first urination, perianal edema and wound healing etc. Results:There was significant difference in degree of pain of 6 hours as well as 12 hours after operation between these two groups(P<0.05). The treatment group suffered milder pain and was less administered by analgesic. In the aspects of urinary retention, first urination and lower abdominal symptoms, treatment group tended to have significant advantages in decreasing urinary retention, shorten first urination time, improving urination and lower abdominal symptoms(P<0.05). There was significant difference in the occurrence, degress and recovery time of perianal edema as well as wound healing time(P<0.05). It showed better outcomes in the treatment group. Conclusion:Thermal moxibustion combined with auricular point therapy may be benificial to prevent and treat the postoperative complications of external dissection and internal ligation hemorrhoidectomy such as anal pain, urinary retention and perianal edema. It is likely to allievate postoperative pain and urination related symptoms as well as decrease occurrence of urinary retention and perianal edema. Meanwhile, shortening recovery time of edema and wound healing.
