ObjectiveTo discuss the vocational interest proportion of nurses, and analyze the relationship between the work outcomes and the vocational interest types; To help the managers of hospital learn the vocational characteristics of nurses, providing a reference for medical institutions in the aspects of recruitment, nurse management, personnel training, clinical post distribution and teaching and so on.MethodsQuestionnaire survey was used to collect data and the questionnaire is consist of a demographic characteristics scale, a Holland vocational interest scale and a work outcomes scale. The data were collected by random sampling among 370 clinical registered nurses covering 35 departments in a grade A tertiary hospital of Jiangsu Province. Mean, median, mode frequencies and some other descriptive statistics were used to describe the characteristics of the demographics, the scores of the vocational interest types and work outcomes of the survey participants; T-test, variance analysis and Non-parametric test were performed to examine the influence of the demographics on work outcomes including job performance, OCB and turnover intention; Multivariate liner regression was performed to analyze the relationship between the work outcomes and vocational interest types of nurses. Data analysis was performed on SPSS 16.0.Results1. The average scores of the vocational interest types of nurses were:conventional (5.96±1.69), realistic(6.34±1.43), investigative(5.35±1.90), enterprising(4.96±2.10), social(5.97±1.51), artistic(4.66±1.71), the realistic, social and conventional types scored the highest, artistic, investigative and enterprising types scored the lowest.2. The work outcomes scores of the 370 nurses present a skewed distribution with a maximum 15.00, a minimum 8.64 and an average 13.09±1.39.3. The factors that affect the work outcomes are:vocational interest types(P<0.01), age(P<0.01), years at position(P<0.01), work properties (P<0.01), education background(P<0.01) and professional ranks(P<0.01).4. The vocational interest types affect the work outcomes, among which, investigative and social type have statistical significance(P<0.01); Vocational interest type also can influence the dimensions of work outcomes. Conventional, investigative and enterprising type affect the job performance(P<0.01); Investigative and enterprising type affect OCB(P<0.01); Investigative affect turnover intention(P<0.01).Conclusions1. The vocational interest types of nurses are biased towards conventional and realistic, and nurses are more competent in practical and repetitive work, but lacking thoughts of investigation, enterprising and art;2. The work outcomes scores of the 370 nurses present a skewed distribution with a high average scores on the whole. On the level of three dimensions of work outcomes, OCB scored the highest, turnover scored the lowest which implies a high organizational citizenship behavior beyond the in-role behavior, willing to contribute their own force to the organization voluntarily. However, the low turnover intention scores suggest that the present organization can not give the nurses the sense of belonging and attraction, implying a low satisfaction indirectly.3. Age, years at position, work properties, education background and professional ranks affect the work outcomes.4. The higher score of investigative and social type of nurses, the higher score of work outcomes.
