BackgroundAs China’s reform of medical care and health service system are going futher, the content and scope of nursing service are also being gradually expanded. However China has been seriously short of nursing human resources for a long time, thus how to improve nursing team performance becomes a major challenge for the nursing managers. Since improving team performance and enhancing team emotional intelligence are currently research focus, in this paper the relationship between emotional intelligence and performance is investigated and analyzed by using empirical data in nursing team so it provides reference for nurse managers to improve them both.AimThis study aims to analyze the composition of nursing team emotional intelligence, and to investigate the impact of team emotional intelligence dimensions on nursing team performance and also to analyze how demographic and sociological features of nurses affect team emotional intelligence and team performance.Methods1. Literature AnalysisReview domestic and international published literature, summarize the academic achievements on emotional intelligence and team performance, based on the theoretic research to induce and consolidate dimensions of nursing team emotional intelligence and team performance.2. Questionnaire Survey and Data AnalysisOn the principle of convenience sampling,527 nurses from 5 public hospitals in Shanghai were investigated.481 questionnaires are valid. The questionnaire is composed by Emotional Intelligence Scale(EIS), integration capability scale for team emotional intelligence, and team performance self-rating scale. Data is statistically analyzed with SPSS20.0 statistical software.Result1. The establishment of structure model for nursing team emotional intelligence is:emotional intelligence includes two parts, nurse individual emotional intelligence and team emotional integration capability. Individual emotional intelligence has four dimensions:emotional use, emotional awareness, emotional management of others and emotional self-management; team emotional integration capability consists of four components:conflict management, team emotion, team norms, and learning atmosphere.2. The establishment of a linear model of emotional intelligence and nursing team performance:both team emotional integration capability and individual emotional intelligence are positively correlated with team performance at the a=0.01 level, and the correlation coefficient between the team integration capability and team performance is 0.793, higher than the one between Individual emotional intelligence and team performance. In the linear model, the standardized regression coefficients are is 0.680 and 0.271 respectively for team emotional integration capability and individual emotional intelligence, both statistically significant over the 0.01 level.3. Nurses score an average of 3.92 ± 0.49 on individual emotional intelligence scale; among the four factors of that scale the use of emotions earns the highest average while emotion perception gets the lowest. The average score of team emotional integration capability is 3.70±0.64; the highest average factor is Learning Atmosphere while the lowest one is conflict management.4. Some characteristics factors, including job title, job duty, work experience, psychological training experience, play regulatory role in nursing team emotional intelligence and performance, with significant differences statistically.ConclusionCombined with the current characteristics of nursing management and training, besides the training of the operational capacity of nurses, it is also recommended to improve the nurse emotional intelligence; it is necessary for the management team to establish a sound and effective mechanism for team emotional intelligence integration, including effective mechanisms for conflict management, learning ward cultivation, establishment of teamwork and team spirit; team emotional intelligence specifications setup, and team atmosphere building. And it would also be helpful to the team performance improvement if the job arrangements could have reflected the team emotional intelligence.
