BackgroundWith the development of modern science and technology, mobile phones, computers, televisions and other electronic equipment are more widely used by people in daily life and work. This change makes the degeneration of lumbar spine becoming popular, even in youths. In the non-operative treatment of this kind of disease, the curative effect of acupuncture, massage, cupping and other traditional therapies work effectively. However, most of patients only wish to spend time and money when suffering from discomfort, but less thinking of what went wrong. If the cause of a disease is unable to be removed or corrected, no treatment is good enough to prevent the patients from returning to hospital. For the lumbar spine disease caused due to long-term bad posture, traction is a very effective way. If a patient can adhere to do some suspension tensile action which belong to function exercise in medical area of massage every day, such as grasping the horizontal bar or door frames etc. hard material at height to make feet off the ground, stretching the spine vertically by body weight, it is good for relieving tense spasm lumbar muscle, opening the interspace of lumbar vertebrae and surrounding soft tissue to promote blood circulation, correcting abnormal lumbar physiological curvature change, thereby enhancing of lumbar degenerative disease, especially the clinical effect of the treatment of degenerative lumbar spinal column inflammation, and further consolidating curative effect, preventing recurrence. In addition, in the regard of the economics, self-weight suspension traction is an active exercise therapy without any cost, the traction time can be effectively decomposed to complete in spare time without impacting routine work. Place doing traction is also flexible for work area, home, outdoor recreation, etc. Horizontal bar, door frames and other traction apparatus are easy to be accessed as well.ObjectiveThis study intends to explore a new method on treating lumbar degenerative spondylitis through self-weight suspension traction with massage treatment. It is a trial on the treatment of lumbar degenerative spondylitis with open minds.MethodIn this study,60 cases of lumbar degenerative spondylitis were randomly divided into Treatment group and Control group. Two groups were all combined with massage therapy as basis treatment. The treatment group used self-weight suspension traction method and the control group used supine traction treatment. Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and evaluation of Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) lower lumbar function system are applied to evaluate patients before and after treatment. Then all data are collected for analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of two methods in the treating lumbar degenerative spondylitis.ResultGenders, age, course of the patients in two groups are comparable after statistical analysis calculating. There was no significant difference (P>0.05).Before treatment, the pain index had no significant difference between the treatment group and the control group (P>0.05), two groups are comparable. The index after treatment in each group were significantly different from before treatment (P<0.05), indicating that the treatment group and control group both can ease pain effectively. There was significant difference (P<0.05) on easing pain between treatment group and control group after treatment, it showed the treatment group worked better than the control group. After the treatment, two groups of patients with JOA score significantly higher than the score before treatment, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). It meant two kinds of treatment worked well on improving the symptoms of lumbar degenerative spondylitis. After treatment, scores of treatment groups compared to the control group had no significant difference (P=0.44>0.05), suggesting that the treatment group and the control group both worked well on releasing waist symptoms, but the difference is not obvious.Comparing two groups of patients with scores of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) in JOA scoring sheet, the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05), that mean they are comparable. The ADL scores after treatment are obviously higher than before treatment, the difference are statistically significant (P<0.05) when comparing inside a same group. It shows the two ways of treatment improving ADL in patients of lumbar degenerative spondylitis. The t-test for scoring before and after treatment, t=2.80, P=0.00 (P<0.05), means two groups achieved improvement on ADL, and the treatment group is better than the control group.Conclusion(1) The self-weight suspension traction combined with massage therapy is effective in treating lumbar degenerative spondylitis.(2) For patients with lumbar degenerative spondylitis, the self-weight suspension traction combined with massage therapy is better than common traction combined with massage therapy on pain relief.(3) The treatment group is better that control group on ADL improvement.(4) Compared to the traditional traction, self-weight suspension traction has the advantages on convenience, time and money saving, personalize. It is worthy to promote in clinic.
