ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the use traditional Chinese medicine among maintenance hemodialysis patients from Guangdong Provincial Hospital dialysis department during the past 1 year. And through a questionnaire, their demands for TCM were searched to guide future clinical practice making the best of TCM among dialysis patientsMethodsThis study started from September 2013 to October 2014. MHD patients from Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine who met the diagnosis criteria and agreed to cooperate with the investigation were studied. It was designed as a cross-sectional study.190 cases were collected, with the collection of Demographic characteristics and basic clinical information, their use of Chinese medicine for the past 1 year, including Chinese medicine decoction, oral Chinese medicine, intravenous Chinese medicine, external Chinese medicine, etc. Using a self-designed questionnaire concerning the demands of hemodialysis patients for Chinese medicine, we tried to demonstrate their basic attitudes towards Chinese medicine, the preferred options of TCM interventions and their demands to deal with common complications of MHD. All data were properly managed using software like Microsoft Excel and EPI-DATA 3.1 software. SPSS 18.0 software was used for statistical analysis. Descriptive charts were used to show the results.ResultsA total of 190 patients, of whom 86 were male,104 female, with the mean age of (58.38±14.01) were collected. And 72.1% of the patients had been retired, most with middle school education background. The top three primary diseases leading to end stage renal disease (ESRD) were:chronic glomerulonephritis:36.3% (69/190), hypertension:25.8%(49/190) and diabetes: 22.6%(43/190). Dialysis vintage:1-4 years accounted for 27.9%(53/190),5-9 years (46.3%) (88/190). In terms of the use of the Chinese medicine decoction, 231 prescriptions were collected, usually 2-3 day dose each prescription. 39.0%for common cold (90/231) and others for insomnia, constipation.46 prescriptions were used for bathing arteriovenous fistula and were uniformaly "Wen Yang Huo Xue Formula".162 patients with oral Chinese medicine with a total number of 126 kinds, including 57 kinds for common cold,21 kinds for cardiovascular,11 species for dizziness and insomnia,10 kinds for tonic. Intravenous formulation had a total 123 users with 13 species, including seven kinds of promoting blood flow, five kinds for tonifying Qi and nourishing Yin, one kind of detoxification.119 patients once used topical Chinese medicine, with 25 kinds of external Chinese medicine, mainly for pain, itching, as well as eye problems. Results from Questionnaire showed,71%(135/190) believed that Chinese medicine helped,22%(41/190) considered it might help, thereby a total of 93%of patients possessed a positive attitude towards Chinese medicine.93.7%(178/190) of MHD patients believed that Chinese medicine were of benefit for their symptoms. On the common symptoms (such as:itching, insomnia, thirst, fatigue, constipation, pain, chest tightness, convulsions, colds, fistula maintenance, dialysis hypotension, cardiovascular event prevention), the majority of MHD patients preferred Chinese medical treatment. The specific form of treatment differs depending on the symptoms. Generally, Chinese medicine was considered to be helpful according the main principles and in accordance with the clinical treatment.Conclusion1.The traditional Chinese medicine has been widely used in MHD patients for relief of common symptoms.2.The MHD patients demand for traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine is the first choice in the treatment of those implications and symptoms.3. The demand of the patients with Chinese medicine use is consistent to the prescription of our department from the collection of the Chinese medicine use for the past 1 year.4.The limitation of this study is that some data of medicine use are not included. And evaluation of the Chinese medicine effect requires further and more detailed research.
