Objectives(1) To evaluate the effect of Safety Culture Training(SCT) on enhancing perceptions of patient safety culture among nursing managers of the2nd hospital.(2) To evaluate the effect of SCT on improving the level of patient safety culture of the2nd hospital.(3) To evaluate the effect of SCT on reducing the incidence of adverse events of the2nd hospital.(4) To provide an effective basis for improving the safety system of hospital, and further carrying out an objective basis for policies decision-making by health management dapartment.Methods(1) Program design. According to the experience of nursing safety training program which has been implemented in2012, combined with foreign literature review,we have developed SCT for nursing managers of the2nd hospital.(2) Research sample.Used random sampling,102nd hospitals were investigated.10hospitals were divided into control group and intervention group at random, each group has67nursing managers from52nd hospitals.(3) Study intervention. The intervention group was received SCT, the control group was no received the training intervention.(4) Effect evaluation. The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPS) and Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ) were administered just before and6months after the educational program. The rates of hospital-acquired pressure ulcers, patient falls, and unplanned extubations were collected just before and6months after the educational program.(5) Statistical analysis. Data was analyzed by SPSS17.0. Frequency distributions described the demographic variables and t-tests were used to evaluate the effect of the training intervention on SAQ Scores. The differences between HSOPS Positive Scores and Rate of Adverse Events were assessed with Chi-square test. A two-sided p<0.05was considered statistically significant.Results(1) The total positive composite scores of HSOPS were significantly increased (p<0.01)6months post educational SCT. Significant improvements of nursing managers’positive scores were observed in7dimensions (p<0.01):"Supervisor/manager expectations and actions promoting safety","Management support for patient safety","Overall perceptions of safety","Frequency of event reporting","Teamwork across hospital units","Handoffs and transitions", and "Non-punitive response to error". However, the increase in positive score in "Non-punitive response to error" was below75%.(2) The total positive composite scores of HSOPS in intervention group was significantly increased than control group after6months post educational SCT(p<0.05). Significant improvements of nursing managers’positive scores were observed in8dimensions(p<0.05):"Teamwork within hospital units","Supervisor/manager expectations and actions promoting safety","Management support for patient safety","Overall perceptions of safety","Frequency of event reporting","Teamwork across hospital units","Handoffs and transitions", and "Non-punitive response to error".(3) The workplace safety climate, job satisfaction, teamwork, and stress recognition of SAQ were significantly increased in nursing managers6months after the educational SCT (p<0.01). The score for "Stress Recognition" was still low (mean=3.21).(4) The workplace safety climate, job satisfaction, teamwork, and stress recognition of SAQ in intervention group was significantly increased than control group in nursing managers6months after the educational SCT (p<0.01).(5) The rate of patient falls per1,000patient days and rate of hospital-acquired pressure ulcers per100admissions declined significantly after educational SCT (p<0.05). No significant difference was observed in the rate of unplanned extubation of ICU per100admissions between pre and post SCT.Conclusion(1) SCT is effective in enhancing perceptions of patient safety culture among nursing managers of the2nd hospital.(2) SCT is effective in improving the level of patient safety culture of the2nd hospital.(3) SCT is effective in reducing the incidence of adverse events of the2nd hospital.(4) SCT is a good method for improving perceptions of patient safety culture among Chinese nursing managers, and worthy recommending.
