Objectives The purpose of the current study was to develop a scale to measure Chinese nurses’compliance belief with standard precautions, so as to provide a better evaluation tool for identifying, measuring and monitoring nurses’compliance belief with standard precautions. Methods The development of Nurses’Compliance Belief with Standard Precautions scale (NCBSP) was developed theoretically based on the framework of the Health Belief Model and practically combining general literature review, semi-structured interview and open-ended questionnaire. Four hundred and eighty-three nurses were recruited by a cluster stratified random proportionate sampling method in Hunan Province to evaluate the items analysis and confirm factors analysis, and then another321nurses were recruited by the same sampling method to examine the reliability and validity.According to the results of item analysis, reliability and validity, the formal scale was built with the modification of measurement items.Results1. Reliability:The NCBSP were founded stable (test-retest y=0.76), and split-half reliability for each dimensions were ranged from0.81to0.96and0.76to0.96; the a for the global scale was0.70and0.96in the first and second sample tests, respectively. Cronbach’s a coefficients of reliability were found to both ranged from0.85to0.95for each dimensions; the a for the global scale was0.91and0.90in the first and second sample tests, respectively.2. Validity:(1) Content validity: Item-level CVI (Ⅰ-CVI) were ranged from0.43~0.69(P<0.001), and the Scale-level CVI Universal Agreement (S-CVI/UA)=0.91, Scale-level CVI Averange (S-CVI/AVE)=0.98.(2) The General Self-Efficacy Scale was selected because it is a frequently used "criterion" instrument measuring Self-Efficacy, and the moderate correlation was found between Self-Efficacy dimension and General Self-Efficacy Scale(r=0.43, P<0.001).(3)Construct validity:The underlying theory was strongly supported by confirm factor analysis. The correlations between the NCBSP and Organizational Environment Administration scale, organizational culture dimension, Social Support Rating Scale, Compliance with Standard Precautions Scale were0.37(P<0.001),0.43(P<0.001),0.23(P<0.001),0.51(P<0.001), respectively, and there were significant difference of NCBSP scores among groups on different level of social support. The NCBSP scores correlated weakly with Responding Desirably on Attitudes and Opinions scores, indicating good divergent validity. Conclusion The Nurses’ Compliance Belief with Standard Precautions Scale is a reliable and valid scale for measurement of Compliance Belief with Standard Precautions of nurses.
